2 0 - The Oakville Beaver, F rida y A u g u s t 22, 2003 Basketball can trace its origin back to the YMCA Sometimes it's difficult to trace things back to their beginning, but not so with the popular game of basket ball. Basketball is a true YMCA orig inal - and was invented by a Canadian! Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. Jam es N aism ith, a Canadian YMCA Physical D irector and a teacher. His boss at Springfield College in Massachusets suggested that he develop a new indoor game that would be more fun for the stu dents than the usual activities of gym nastics, weight lifting and stretching. On Dec. 12, 1891 Naismith hung two peach baskets from the railing of the gymnasium's second level running track and posted 13 rules for a new game called "basketball." The game was an instant hit. Within a few days, teachers at a nearby girl's school con vinced Naismith to teach them the game and in 1892 the first female bas ketball team was organized. The game o f basketball has grown and evolved over the years to the point where it is an Olympic sport and a household word. For more than 15 years the YMCA has been delivering a quality youth basketball program to the community o f Oakville. Registrations are currently being accepted for the fall season in the POSTCARDS FROM THE V YM CA's popular co-ed Youth Basketball o f Canada (YBC) and the girls only W omen's Youth Basketball of Canada (W YBC) leagues. Registration information is avail able at the YMCA at 905-845-3417. Team sponsorship opportunities are also available for the first time at the Oakville YMCA. Recent facility rent increases sparked by government cuts to education and municipal funding have forced basketball leagues such as the YBC and W YBC to increase regis tration fees to the public. You can help to keep these pro grams within reach o f all Oakville children by sponsoring a YMCA bas ketball team.
