I didn't know Ray that well yet at the time, but I took the chance and asked him. It was a $300 cheque -- quite a bit of money at the time for us kids. When I picked up that cheque from him, we hit it off as best friends instantly." After he moved with his family to Ohio, Mathieson came back and spent the summer of 1981 working with Ray as a summer parks and recreation leader and living with his parents Peter and Rosemary McConnell. "I knew Ray for only two years before we moved, and I last seen him two weeks before he died. I've kept in touch with the McConnells -- I was like part of their family -- and I've wanted to come back to help present this award for the last 20 years." Mathieson also spoke of the trust he had developed with his friend. "If you don't have trust, you don't have friendship. The same can be said for a marriage and career. Without trust to go with the friendship, marriage or career, you can't be successful." Concluded Peter McConnell proud ly, "It never ceases to amaze me that the Town of Oakville remembers the con tributions of a 19-year-old kid."
