IN D U S TR IA L HOSE & H Y D R A U L IC S LTD. IS O 9001: 2000 R E G E .T * N ^ 4 e r o q u ip Ford o f Canada's new headquarters is loaded w ith state-of-the-art communications technology, and features an improved cafeteria, expanded fitness centre, aerobics studio, convenience store and "oasis' areas for breaks. Story by Howard Mozel Ford of Canada's new headquarters may possess the same 600-employee capacity as its predecessor but the environment in which workers find themselves is truly worlds apart. To make the building more "functional and friendly," explained Vice President of Public Affairs John Jelinek, it features an improved cafeteria, expanded fitness centre, aerobics studio, ATM, convenience store, "oasis" areas for breaks and an open concept with lots of natural light. " Employees.aren't automatons," said Jelinek. "We have tried to make (the building) better for them, rec ognizing they're spending more time there than ever before." Less aesthetic, but just as important, the building is loaded with state-of-the-art communications technol ogy that will, for example, support wireless laptop feeds from company servers. The headquarters -which features fibre optic cables to accommodate video con ferencing via satellite uplinks -also has television and broadcast capabilities. "In the old building'we were stumbling over our limi tations trying to put 1990s technology into a 1960s building," says Jelinek. "Sooner or later we'd have to start laying wires down the middle of hallways." It became so impractical to completely upgrade Ford's old haunt that the company realized it would be only slightly more expensive and far less disruptive to just rebuild. "At some point you really exceed the limitations of the utility of a building," said Jelinek. The result is a purpose-built structure featuring fullyintegrated wired and wireless technology plus moveable walls and flexible materials ideal for expansion or reconfiguration. Six storeys high, the new building is one floor less than the old one but at 187,000 sq. ft., it's 11,000 sq. ft. larger. (A below-grade lower concourse houses graph ic services, Fordstar Studio, archives, building services and a hair stylist.) The teak and marble accents of the old building may be a thing of the past, but the new digs have 40 conference rooms - as opposed to only seven in the original - plus an improved heat, cooling and ventilation system. In keeping with the "functionality over rank" mandate of the new building, Jelinek says only two offices (including that of the president) have their own win dows. Instead, an open concept maximizes natural light and allows employees panoramic views of Oakville, especially from five small meeting rooms in the cylindrical component on the west face of the building.
