www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 4, 2014 | 24 Feast for Good another success for Hospital Foundation In November, Mye Japanese celebrated 27 years in business. Owned and operated by the Aoki family, patriarch Motoaki knows he owes much of his success to the community that has supported him. As such, he's been dedicated to giving back to the community in the form of the Feast for Good fundraiser in support of the New Oakville Hospital This year's third-annual Feast for Good raised a whopping $24,730 between ticket sales, a silent auction and raffle draw. Aoki's daughter, Sayaka, describes the night as a "great event," attended by more than 80 people. Held at Mye 2 Restaurant, this year's event was different from any other. "We had a professional DJ for the whole night and by the end of it we had pushed all the tables and chairs to the side and everyone was dancing." But that's not the part of the evening that really stands out to the Aoki family. It was the generosity of those in attendance that has made them so proud and thankful. Sayaka's artist sister, Shizuka, donated a small one-of-a-kind painting that sold for $3,000. And after all the auction items were sold a regular customer grabbed the microphone and auctioned off one of the restaurant's menus, with a promise it would be signed by the entire Aoki family, with a starting bid of $1,000 by his wife. "It made my dad very emotional and really moved us all," Sayaka says, explaining the menu ultimately sold for more than that generous opening bid. The event was originally started as an expression of his gratitude to the community. The Oakville Hospital is near and dear to her father's heart. It was the place his only Canadian-born child was delivered and is a central part of the community that has welcomed him, his family, and his restaurants over the years. When Motoaki came to Canada in 1986, personally invited by then mayor Harry Barrett to open a Japanese restaurant in the town, he didn't know his venture would be so well accepted. Twenty-seven years and two restaurants later, he and his family are happy to give back to the community by donating all sales for the event to the Oakville Hospital Foundation in support of the new Oakville hospital, and look forward to expansion of the restaurant in the near future. Sayaka says they'll also "continue to hold this event once-ayear." Visit Mye Japanese Restaurant at 143 Church St. or Mye 2 at 360 Dundas St. West.
