C2 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 4, 2004 M usic (Continued from page C1) evant. To the fans that enjoyed The Musical Box, Genesis still speaks to them. The large scale, over-the-top. rock opera stuff is still appealing. But to me. it said nothing at all. Just like to most of the men and women who long for the days when they, and Genesis, were young and interesting, hiphop music and the new breed of punk likely doesn't make sense. Even the new purveyors of prog-rock, namely Radiohead, likely don't make much sense to the Genesis fans. The context in which Radiohead has made music, and the context in which Genesis made music, are entire ly different. Though both bands are English, and address the sorry state of England and its politics, they are worlds apart. The best music, as with the best of any art, transcends con text. Picasso's most-famous painting, Guernica, still works because it addresses the horrors of war. Shakespeare's plays still work because, though we don't understand all of the mytholog ical references, we all under stand love and loyalty and greed, and Shakespeare wrote those themes better than anyone ever has in English. Genesis does not transcend the context in which they thrived. The reason so many people enjoyed the show, I assume, is because it took them back to a different time, a con text in which they are familiar, and perhaps, many of them con tinue to live. The most poignant illustra tion of this nostalgia was not the pot-smoking references uttered among friends, but the actual pot smoking. There were clouds of smoke outside the theatre before the show, and the guy in front of me returned to his seat midway through the concert Your gCiide to area professionals eaney's Hairstyling has been an Oakville v v V \ ' l . favourite for many years - 56 to be * 4 1 exact.
