The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday N o vem b er 12, 2003 - A 3 Ward 4 Local - Sandelowsky Oakvillegreen executive director Renee Sandelowsky, who won her Ward 4 local seat by a w ide margin, said it was a victory that proved to her the pow er o f commitment. "There's hope in this world. Individuals can actual ly make a difference." she said. "All you need is confi dence." Sandelowsky replaces Jody Sanderson, w ho did not seek re-election, by besting contenders Sean Kemer. Jeff Gareau. Amy Maurer and Annette Kirk. Sandelowsky said the large number of votes she received "made it very clear" that residents agreed w ith her platform and understood exactly what kind of councillor they'll have representing them over the next term. "They knew what I stood for." she said. "They know what they're getting." This. Sandelowsky explained, includes someone who will fight for a natural heritage system in the north and clean air. "We'll have the biggest natural heritage system in the GTA if 1can help it." she added. "The Ward 4 man date is to save as much greenspace as we cart. On Council we have to come together and do what's right for the people." Ward 4 Region - Allan Elgar A llan Elgar, w ho retained his Ward 4 local/regional seat for a second term, was plainly ecstatic after his victory w as assured. "1 feel like O akville has a future." said Elgar, w ho beat form er local councillor Mark Brown by a nearly four-to-one margin. N ew com er G ino Serra w as a distant third. "This sends a m essage that peo ple care a bom the protection o f the environm ent over the long term, a strong message." This concern. Elgar elaborated, is exactly w'hat he heard at residents' doors during the campaign from taxpayers who are upset over the "degrada tion" o f infrastructure, such as sports facilities and the road system , and want a change. Ward 5 Local - Marc Grant It was a stop light at Sixth Line and M cCraney Street that no residents w anted, but Town Council passed anyway, that led M arc Grant to run for office. "I plan to prove my worth to the com munity," said Grant. Ward 5's new ly elected local council lor Monday night. "I'v e said all through this that the residents have the right to say w hat happens in their com munity and I hope they understand that I'll be there for them ." said G rant w ho will now fill the seat vacated by form er local councillor Janice Caster. Caster held the seat for six years, but vacated it this election to unsuccessfully challenge the ward's regional/local councillor Jeff Knoll. Grant won easily with 1.495 votes. His closest challen g er w as Brian H opkins (1.087 votes), follow ed by M ah-m ood Khan (852), Bruce Callan (712), Robert W agner (549). Caret Schoch (531) and Del M clntee (227). Ward 6 Region - Janice Wright Janice Wright, the Ward 6 local councillor who suc cessfully made the jump to the local/regional seat Monday night, said s h e 's looking forward to tackling residents' concerns on a larger canvas. "This provides a better way for me to serve the community. This opens the door to wider issues, "she said. "I feel overwhelmed and delighted. I feel really wonderful about the confidence (residents) have in me." Wright - who beat opponents Maria Robinson and Darla Campbell - said her first priorities at the local level include the Town's noise and nuisance bylaws and getting the municipality's Task Force for the Environmental Strategic Plan up and running. Council's six new councillors will also have to brought up to speed quickly, she added, so that solid decisions can be made and their wards are properly represented. At the regional level. Wright said a priority will be to maximize Halton's already stellar waste diversion accomplishments - possibly using the Milton Waste Management Site as a source o f "green fuel." "I stand for what they wanted." said Adams, who beat candidates Vicky Henderson and Monique Ling. Adams said the electorate feels that Oakville is sim ply growing too fast and for the sake of its future those making decisions had better know "where we re going." As a result, he said his first priority on Council will be to tackle the secondary plans for land north of Dundas Street. "We have to do it right," he said.
