CCAH and Town of Oakville present Black History Month The Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) is partnering with the Oakville Museum to host the kickoff to Black History Month. This year's theme is Black History Then & Now: A Link in Time, meant to link "the past to the present and celebrating Black culture in the community through the art forms of music, dance, visual arts, film, storytelling and the oral tradition," said organizers. The celebration will be held at Oakville Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., on Thursday, Feb. 5. It will feature traditional and contemporary art forms celebrating the cultural heritage of African people. It will include exhibits of Oakville's early Black History, art by Sheridan College students and pieces of African-Canadian art. A facilitated tour of the exhibit will run from 6:30-7 p.m. and will remain on display at Town Hall until Feb. 27. The event will also have live performances by Diana Braithwaite, Chris Whiteley and African drum-and-dance group Beyond Sound. Drummers, dancers, singers and musicians will present a cultural showcase that celebrates Black History and culture. The performances begin at 7 p.m. on the main stage. While the celebration is free to attend, donations to the CCAH will be accepted. For more information about events, visit www.ccah.ca or contact Veronica Tyrrell at 905-257-0581. The CCAH combines arts, culture and heritage activities to enhance the community's knowledge of different cultures and works to increase the appreciation of all cultures that make up the diverse communities of Oakville and Halton. The local organization also provides outreach to schools within Halton region with programs based in the history of African heritage and culture, as well as partners with other organizations to provide a wide range of youth leadership, adult and seniors programs. Every February, organizers produce a number of activities related to Black History Month. 5 | Friday, January 16, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Whether you call it drywall, gypsum wallboard or sheetrock, it's all 100% recyclable to us.
