The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 28, 2003 - A3 Oakville cleans up at awards ceremony Conservation Awards presented By Stephanie Thiessen S P E C IA L T O T H E BEA V ER H a ito n Linen O u tle t ~ Oakville was seeing green at last week's Conservation Awards of Excellence cere mony -- not out of envy, since it took home the lion's share of awards, but out of environmental concern. The awards, held by Conservation Halton (CH), took place at its administra tion centre in Burlington. The annual awards ceremony is designed to recognize people and organizations that make outstanding contributions to conservation in the Halton watershed, organizers said. CH chair Jean Williams said in her opening com ments: "Wherever you live in the watershed, your actions affect your neighbours down the stream. If we protect our watersheds, we'll all see envi ronmental benefits." There were six categories of awards, with Oakville resi dents and groups winning in three. In the citizen category. Oakville's David Carter was selected for co-ordinating the development of a Heritage Trail system that links local creeks to the Lake Ontario waterfront in Oakville. Oakvillegreen conserva tion Association was awarded the community conservation award for promoting the preservation and protection of the Trafalgar Moraine natural feature in north Oakville. In the education category. Jeff Stone, a teacher at Oakville's Sheridan Public School, was selected for developing environmental education programs and implementing a school natu ralization project. Also included in the awards ceremony was the Ralph Sherwood Honour Roll, named after a long-time CH director. It's presented to past and present directors of CH and its volunteer founda tion for exemplary efforts in protecting the natural environ ment. This year, one of the three recipients was Robert Bateman, an internationallyacclaimed artist and life mem ber of the Conservation Halton Foundation. Although Bateman -- who now lives in BC -- was n't able to attend the ceremo ny. he sent a letter of appreci ation in which he said. "Despite the fact that I moved to BC in 1995, a large part of my heart and soul remains in Halton country." The other two recipients were Ninalee Craig of Toronto, a foundation director and Brian Penman of Milton, a CH director. The Hamilton Spectator was also recognized as was Glen Alford for stewardship. What could help in that regard is that only the regions of Peel. Durham and York are under increased restrictions and precautionary measures as a result of SARS. But Dr. Nosal said there are precautions in place in the region to help limit the spread of the potentially-deadly virus. "What is happening now. for example, is the expectation that signage in the physician offices would say something to the effect that if you have symptoms, like a fever or cough, that you have to report to reception immediately." Dr. Nosal said. "These routine enhanced practices must be in place in physi cian offices and certainly in hospitals." Family physicians have been contacted by the Region through its centralized e-mail and fax system about these kinds of procedures. Ontario hospitals are in constant contact with the Ministry of Health about their restrictions and precautionary measures. People going through emergency departments are subject to SARS screening tests and hospital visitors are being reminded by security guards about reading signage posted at the entrances. · I r is h · li j « ,· H ig h la n d - A c t in g ^ a M u s ic a l T h e a tre . . . , ...
