Artist Janet Hodgson wants us to take time to study time By Craig MacBride O A K V IL L E B E A V E R S T A F F Janet Hodgson's exhibition at the Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens is a study of time travel. The most obvious use of this in her show Here and There Then and Now is in her use of the Gairloch House, which was a copy of a home in Toronto, which was, like Gairloch, owned by W.G. MacKendrick. Those two homes were based on homes designed in Britain, particularly Spade House, which was built for H.G. Wells, author o f The Time Machine. Everything in the show revolves around the idea of time travel, of the same space in a differ ent place in a different time. The show is made up of three pieces. In the centre room of the house is an intricate Here and There Then and Now at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens time machine made out of cardboard. A large cardboard satellite dish at the back of the contrap tion is attached to a cardboard chair. A cardboard console sits in front of the chair. The machine sits as a reminder of what is going on in the videos that occupy the two other rooms. In the north room, the video is of the house's interior. It is actually a video of that one room, played on the walls of that room. The fireplace in the video is imposed over where the fireplace actually is. Likewise with the large window over looking the garden. The first of the three sections that makes up the video is of a man wandering around the room of the gallery, passing one woman, and then missing another, as if chasing her or looking for her. Using three projectors, it is interesting to watch as the man and woman disappear into the comers, where there's nothing projected, and emerging on the next wall, passing each other but never acknowl edging each other, as if the dark comers are vor texes into different moments. The scene then shifts to a house. The basic build of the room is exactly the same as the room in the gallery, but it looks like a home now. A man sits down on a couch to read the newspaper, and the man from the first scene, the time traveler, leans against the mantle, then looks out the win dow. Again, the scene shifts, this time into another home of the same shape, before returning to the gallery setting. The second video, in the south room, does the same thing, except with the exterior of the houses instead of the interior. The man simply wanders through the landscape, up the steps in the garden, to the front gate, along the water's edge, and there are nearly imperceptible clues that as he's moving through the property, he is also moving through time. The three pieces, which really make up one large piece, not only show the interconnectedness of these specific homes, but the connection of his tory to today, of foreign places to the places we move through. It seems to be about evolution and the flow of life, expressing how What we build now affects what we build in the future, as well as how we build our future. Janet Hodgson's Here and There Then and Now runs until Jan.2 at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E.
