18 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 6, 2003 Oakville School of Dance: Ballet at its best By Paula Henriques Features Writer "One, two, three, four, and plie. One, two, three, four..." The students' graceful movements moved as if swans in the silkiest waters: their poise and lithe bod ies responding to each routine with an effortless grace. The ballet students at the Oakville School of Dance are practicing their rig orous routines, making sure to keep their flexible frames in peak performance for the upcoming ballet season One of the oldest ballet schools in Ontario, the Oakville School of Dance provides a variety of individual forms of dance instruction built upon a solid grounding in classical ballet. Nestled in downtown Oakville, the private school is widely recognized throughout North America Founded by Elizabeth Paterson in I960, and now handled by her daugh ter Amanda, who has performed in vari ous productions around the globe, Oakville School of Dance is the only bal let school in downtown Oakville. "Ballet helps instill confidence, poise, and discipline. The training the students receive here at the Oakville School of Dance will be values they'll use for the rest of their lives," says Frank Bayliss, Administrative Director. Offering boys full scholarships, adult day and evening classes, beginner to pro fessional ballet, jazz, modem, spanish, character dance, and pilates body condi tioning, everyone is welcome at the Oakville School of Dance. All teachers are masters of their field and undergo rig- orous auditions. One of their staff is world renowned flamenco dancer Carmen Romero, who teaches and choreographs. All students have the chance to audi tion for companies around the world and local productions that the School holds annually. Like the Nutcracker - from a few scenes performed to recorded music 26 years ago, the Nutcracker is now a sold-out fill l production that plays at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, accompanied by the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. Or their Spring Evening of Dance, a classical and contemporary repertoire that shows off the School at its best "Whether the students choose to go into ballet professionally or recreationally, we do everything we can to promote our students and help them excel," says Bayliss.
