www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, February 6, 2015 | 18 New funds aim to connect parents with children's education by Rachael Williams Metroland West Media Thirty-four Halton schools are receiving grants from the Province to better connect parents with their children's education. The funding was officially announced late in 2014, when Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris visited Tiger Jeet Singh Public School in Milton to announce that the schools were recipients of Parents Reaching Out (PRO) grants totaling $32,650. The PRO grants are intended to better engage parents in their children's education by actively involving them in lectures, presentations and other activities. The Halton MPP has two children enrolled in the school system in Halton and spoke to the importance of these grants in helping to involve parents in a child's education. "It's a way not only to stay in touch with children's learning experiences but it also improves our children's chances of success in the classroom," she said. All of the grant recipients are from schools in the Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic and French Catholic district school Halton MP Indira Naidoo-Harris boards. "The Halton District School Board is pleased to receive funding through PRO grants to support initiatives that reflect the goals in the board's multiyear plan. The board is committed to every student, and parent involvement is key to students' success," said Kelly Amos, chair of the public school board. In Milton, Tiger Jeet Singh was one of the schools that received the funds, with almost all of the grants valued at $1,000. According to school principal Krista Benedetti, the money will be used to create a healthy living and nutrition program for parents and students. "Our main goal is to make sure we become a community hub and the PRO grants help us reach that goal," said Benedetti. Last year, Tiger Jeet Singh School received a PRO grant and used the money to organize presentations for parents and students around the use of social media. "Just having that conversation opened the doors for parents and kids," said Benedetti. Other recipients of the PRO grants promote a variety of parent-engagement activities including literacy, math, bullying prevention, mental health, nutrition and support for aboriginal communities. Since 2006, the Province has handed out more than 15,000 PRO grants for a total investment of more than $24 million.
