www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, February 19, 2015 | 16 Researchers find subway germs that cause plague continued from p.15 hadn't considered. As if everyone standing wasn't being forced by some unlearned law of high school physics into leaning into the curves. The big dude's menacing voice silenced everyone around us. And so there we silently stood in sweaty fear of leaning, and of being killed for our leanings. It was then that I felt a drop on my face. I looked up, as did the guy who was leaning into me -- a guy I'd later discover was petrified, and from Pennsylvania -- and saw that the drop was coming from the ceiling. And it wasn't alone. Petrified from Pennsylvania and I took turns intercepting the drops from heaven before one could land on (and set off) the big dude, all the while imagining that we were one drop from death. The truth behind the germs Now, get this: it turns out, according to the researchers and their exhaustive findings, the big dude was probably less of a risk and danger to us than the handrails we were gripping for dear life to prevent all our crazy, cavalier leaning. It's true. During the more than 18 months of research, the science guys swabbed the subway and found germs that cause bubonic plague, meningitis, antibiotic-resistant infections, untold stomach ailments, oh, and millions of microbes linked to your basic cheese-and-sausage pizza. Disgusting? Yep. Scary? Oh, yeah. But also helpful. According to The Wall Street Journal: "By documenting the miniature wildlife, microbiologists hope to discover new ways to track disease outbreaks." And that could make the subways (not to mention, the world) safer from pretty much everything. Other than the menacing dude who more or less threatened to kill me. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www.facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter.com/thesportjesters.
