"But there's no alcohol until after the Games are over, because it dehydrates you, especially in the heat," she said. Dalgleish also said her involvement in sport at an early age was likely a con tributor to her current state of fitness, but said part of it is "probably just luck." "Maybe it's something in my genes, I don't know. Some people say `You don't look as old as you are', or, `Your skin looks 10 years younger'. But I did n't start caring for my skin until I reached 40," she said. Despite her luck, however, it hasn't all been smooth sailing. When Dalgleish was in her 30s, she ended up in traction for seven weeks after it was discovered that a disc in her back had disintegrated and another had ruptured. She spent a year and a half in a body brace, fol lowed by a year of recovery. "It was a slow process of walking, bike riding, building the back up," she said. "The biggest thing is strengthening your abs because they take pressure off your back. "The doctors said I could keep at it (working out during recovery), and if it hurt, to quit, so I did, and then tried again, and again," she said. "I'm a pret ty determined individual." And while she's learned to stay active without harming her back, Dalgleish faced another set-back five or six years ago when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Taking a replacement bone density drug and calcium supple ments since then, she said her spine is now considered normal, and her hip close to the same prognosis. "I think stretching, before and after I work out, makes the biggest differ ence," she said. "And I listen to my body. If I'm tired, then I back off for a day and give my body a rest." . "I just do what works for me," she continued. "I don't consider myself a great athlete, I just want to be healthy. And I'm a competitive person, so this is my way of being competitive - playing sports." But Dalgleish admitted that she won't always be able to play sports. Her plan, she said, is to prepare for that stage in her life before it happens. "I'm thinking of taking some refer eeing courses," she said. "I'll still want to be involved in sports, so maybe refer eeing or on the administrative or coach ing side." Provided she maintains her health, however, her current goal is to improve her game on the soccer pitch. "I 'm going to continue playing soc cer until I'm 65, and then be a goaltender until I'm 70," she said. "I suspect I'm the oldest in the league right now," she continued. "I think the others are in their 50s. The nicest thing was when I started and they'd say, `I was thinking of giving it up, but when I heard you were coming into the league, I thought, `I'll try it for a few more years'. I like that I inspire some of the others."
