D 2 - The Oakville Beaver, W e d n e sd a y July 31, 2002 A perfect regular season for the `Horns By Norm Nelson BEAVER SP O R T S EDITOR There is one obvious way to top a perfect reg ular season. And that's with a perfect post season, which is what the Oakville Longhorns will now try to accomplish. They dispensed with the regular season at Bronte Field on Saturday night, disposing the Belleville Panthers 62-7. With their 10th consecutive first place finish in the 10-team Northern Football Conference long since wrapped up, a perfect season was about the only thing on the line in Saturday's reg ular season finale. That and some playoff fine tuning. And here's some advice for coach Tony Molnar. Work on your passing game. It went one for 10, with one measly five-yard reception. On the other hand, the one reception was the only one thrown by the starter, the forty-some thing Mark Demerling, who came in to mop up in the fourth quarter. So, technically, the 'Horns' starting Q.B. did have a 100 per cent completion rate. Gotta like that going into the playoffs. Some other advice. Rest the backs. They're ready. They chewed up the secondyear Belleville franchise. Six touchdowns and 326 yards, including five backs over 40 yards. The 'Horns were also very adept at stopping the running game, allowing only eight yards on 20 carries. Oakville also has two other players in the U19 national team pool -- Diana Matheson and Janice McGann -- but they did not suit up for this exhibition game. Although only 15 years old and going into Grade 11 at St. Thomas Aquinas, Lang, this year, has made a breakthrough with the senior national team. She has been called up several times, including earlier this month in a prestigious friendly against defending Olympic gold medal list Norway. Canada tied 2-2 (as recounted in the Beaver). Canada, which has now won all seven of its U19 pre-World tune-ups, will play Chinese Taipei in Vancouver today (Wednesday). The Oakville Storm 87 girls under 15 rep soccer team pulled off an upset in League Cup quar terfinal action, defeating first place Erin Mills Eagles 3-2 in sudden death overtime. The Storm took the lead in the first half with a goal scored by Diandra Rosart on a break away. Second half play saw the Eagles score two goals to take the lead. With 15 minutes to go Lesley Thorpe tied up the game with a great finish on a well played ball from the mid field. Strong defensive work from Stephanie Mitges, Erica Tiberia, Sylvia Gomes, Kim Carre and Janet Hink (who ended up with a broken nose in the game) along with great goalkeeping from Kelly Massey carried the team into sudden death overtime. Four minutes into overtime Sarah Canteenwalla scored the game winner on a free kick from 20 yards out. A beautiful shot that sailed over the wall and into the far comer of the net. The Storm was rounded out by strong midfield performances by Jenna Hatton, Elspeth Jones, Meagan White, Suzie Burgum, Isabel Karafilov and Nicole Holland. On the bench with a broken foot was Amber Minkkinen. Coach Cecil Canteenwalla was very pleased with the team's performance. The Storm sponsored by Cadbury Schwepps. Diamondbacks earn silver at Aurora all-star tourney The Oakville Diamondbacks girls U-10 all star team earned the silver medal at the Aurora tourna ment over the July 20/21 weekend. The D-Backs were edged out in penalty shots against the Milton Magic after 80 minutes of regu lation and overtime ended in a scoreless tie. Oakville dominated Milton throughout the game, applying heavy pressure but couldn't convert scoring chances into goals. The powerful Diamondback defence, led by Jessica Yee and Frances Ratelle, ensured that the Milton forwards had few scoring opportunities. Keeper Stephanie Pringle was solid in the goal, blocking any threats from the Magic strikers. In the semi final game, the D-Backs controlled the London Tornadoes, never giving an inch. Forwards Marissa Trauzzi and Kate Kavanaugh harassed the overworked London defenders but couldn't break through for a goal. After a 0-0 stale mate through overtime, Oakville triumphed in penalty shots. In the tournament opener, the Diamondbacks overwhelmed Pickering 4-1. Melissa Junior scored twice for the D-Backs while Jessica Raynolds and Esen Gayret earned one goal each.
