Elvis is in the house at St. Andrew's By Wilma Blokhuis B E A V E R F O C U S E D IT O R Elvis Priestley is alive and kicking. Priestley - in real life Rev. Dorian Baxter, 53, an ordained Anglican priest was in concert Saturday night at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. Baxter, who has made waves in Anglican circles as an Elvis imperson ator, was invited as a special guest of St. Andrew's Ministry to Separated, Widowed and Divorced Families. In 1996 he won the Showstopper Award at the Collingwood Elvis Festival. A life-long Elvis fan, Baxter began his impersonations in 1983. He performs at charitable events and fundraisers. His Elvis weddings and hip-gyrating impersonations have raised the ire of the Anglican bishops who have asked for his resignation. Baxter, of Newmarket, was stripped of his licence to perform marriages in 1998, however, as Elvis Priestley, he con tinues to perform them - by request assisted by a United Church minister. "I don't do any weddings without my United Church minister friend present." Baxter sees no conflict between his Elvis impersonations and his role as a priest, "as I have no doubt that Elvis was a strong Christian." Baxter has been at St. Andrew's twice before, three years ago and last April entertaining at the St. Andrew's group's St. George's dinner. "Each month our dinner meeting is dedicated to a saint and culture, and every year in August, we dedicate our evening to a living saint. This year we chose to dedicate it to Dorian Baxter Elvis Priestley - who we consider to be a living saint," said Lee. "Baxter made only one comment about his ministry on Saturday," contin ued Lee. "He said: `As a priest he could bring the news about Christ to 200 to 300 people, but as Elvis Priestley, he can min ister to 60,000 to 80,000 people.' "I believe he is one of the most dynamic preachers in Canada today," said Lee. Prior to coming to Oakville, Baxter attended an Elvis week in Memphis. There he met Dr. Michelle Kissell of Minneapolis, a `diehard Elvis fan' who had treated `the king of rock and roll' for a trauma to the eye. Kissell was in the audience on Saturday night, and not only loaned Baxter her necklace with a TCB (Taking Care of Business) pendent Elvis ga've his entourage and his most devoted fans, but also her autographed white satin scarf. The St. Andrew's evening was a fundraiser for Baxter's two daughters both Ontario scholars - who are entering university. The evening raised $200 $100 for each daughter. - With files from Torstar News Service. Chantal Ayotte · Special to the Beaver Rev.
