The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday S eptem ber 4, 2002 - C3 Barrie Erskine · Oakville Beaver CROWDED HOUSE! the last time the Bell Canadian Open was held in Oakville at Glen Abbey, Tiger Woods helped make it a sell out. By Norm Nelson BEAyER SPO R TS EDITOR he Bell Canadian Open was our baby for ... well, quite frankly, a bit longer than you can expect your own kid to stay at home. For 24 years -- from 1977 to 2000 -- the ven erable national open was held in Oakville at Glen Abbey Golf Club, for all but two years. In both * 1997 and 1980, it was held at Royal Montreal. T The world's top golfers graced the Jack Nicklaus-designed course. You name them and they were there, Jack Nicklaus, of course, Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, David Duval, Vijay Singh, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Mark O'Meara, John Daly, the late Payne Stewart and the list goes on. The year 2000 turned out to be the going away party for the Open, and what a blast it turned out to be. Literally and figuratively. All golfers and most sports fans will still remember the shot that won it, on the 72nd hole at Glen Abbey. Actually it became the shot of the year. If you'll recall, Tiger launched an improbable 218-yard blast out of a sand trap, clear over the water, and on to the green, to set up a birdie to preserve his one-stroke lead for the champi onship. Woods became the only other player besides Lee Trevino in 1971 to win the U.S. Open, British Open and Canadian Open in the same year. Those are the three oldest national champi onships in golf Figuratively, the Open was also a blast -- mainly because of Tiger. The late addition of Tiger to the field -- just a day before the Friday deadline -- created a ton of pre-event hype. Sunday's final round sold out within hours, followed by the entire tournament selling out over the next few days and well before (See Tiger' page C5) It's th a t tim e o f y e a r a g a in ...
