A great summer of lacrosse saw three Oakville Hawks teams win provincial championships, and they're all pictured here. The bantam Hawks won the `A' championship while both the pee wee and novice Hawks teams won their respective `B ' championships. Another provincial lacrosse title for Oakville The Oakville Hawks won the novice `B' provincial champi onship last month to complete an amazing lacrosse trifecta for Oakville. As already recounted in the Oakville Beaver, the bantam Hawks won their `A' provincial title and the peewee Hawks won the `B' provincial title. The novice Hawks won their title in Burlington, giving up the opening goal but than thundering back for a 12-1 championship win over previously undefeated Ottawa-Nepean. Sean Young pumped in two key goals. Taylor Brooks drove hard to the net all game long and fired a beauty past the Nepean goaltender. Ian Brown outran the entire Nepean team to stuff a shot into the twine. At the conclusion of the game, two young men jumped on the floor to join in the celebrations. Hawk player Ben Paterson had suffered an injury several weeks ago that prevented him from playing in the provincials. "We missed Ben's outside shooting and enthusiasm in the provincials," coach Dan Tavares explained. "Ben came to every game to support and cheer on his teammates. He deserves to wear that gold medal around his neck." David Smyth, brother of Hawk player Willy Smyth, was brought into the group for the team photograph. "David has a blood disorder that prevents him from play ing sports. He was a big fan of the team and we felt that he should share in the victory," explained trainer/assistant coach Paul Newhouse. Mike Smyth, the father of Willy and David, was touched by the gesture: "This was a special group of kids. Everyone associated with them should be proud of their accomplishments and of the way that the boys represented their town." Oakville knocked off another undefeated team in the semifinal, 6-1 over Brantford. Braeden Corbeth and Tyler Albrecht showcased their athletic skills with superb perform ances. Brantford could not deal with a fired-up Oakville side and with the incredible goaltending of Adam Ostermeier. "The more rubber that Adam saw, the better he became," said Newhouse. Here's a recap of the preliminary round. Brantford 8, OAKVILLE 7: with two losses translating into a trip home, Oakville had their backs against the wall right from the beginning, losing this close opener on a last minute goal. OAKVILLE 9, Guelph 2: Willy Smyth was one of the game stars with his quick feet and sure hands. Adam Smith scored a stir ring goal that brought the Oakville bench to its feet. OAKVILLE 12, Whitby 1: "Adam Ostermeier, our goaltender, was throwing up a wall against those guys," said coach Tavares. OAKVILLE 12, Windsor 1: Brian Cole, Ryan Adams and Ryan Sloane stood out with their excellent two-way efforts. OAKVILLE 9, Halton Hills 7: what a game! Oakville rebounded twice from three-goal deficits (3-0 and 6-3), thanks to the scoring exploits of Mike Morris and Zack Ruys. OAKVILLE 5, Six Nations 4: this was a game for the Hawk vet erans to shine. Hawks Captain Thomas Sacerty played the game of his life. His punishing defensive play and deft touch with the stick set the tone for the rest of the team. Assistant captains Scott Kruse and Daniel Tavares put on a skills clinic in both ends of the floor. JC Newhouse was a physical presence in the defensive zone and created some breathtaking goal scoring opportunities. Ruys and Morris continued their exhibition of stick magic. CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON The first inkling of future success came when this Hawks club started the field lacrosse season back in the spring. Based on early results, the team was placed in the top A division against the toughest squads in the province. The boys fared very well, with their only losses coming at the hands of the eventual gold and silver medal winners in field lacrosse -- Halton Hills and Brampton. "We learned a lot from those early matches," said coach Tavares. "The boys had to crank up their intensity level and further develop their individual skills, but we had some momentum heading into the indoor box lacrosse season." A focus on team play began to pay off during tournaments that the Hawks entered in Caledon, Niagara-on-the-Lake and Georgetown. The boys played some excellent matches against topnotch competition. Assistant coach Gary Ostermeier cited wins against Peterborough and Six Nations as being watersheds in team development. The novice Hawks just missed being placed in the top `A' divi sion in the provincial championship grouping of box lacrosse. "Our record of 15-9 did not quite make the cut," said assistant coach Brian Kruse. "But we thought that we had a chance in the `B' group if the kids played to their potential." Out of 75 lacrosse organizations in the province the top 10 clubs were seeded `A', while the next 25 clubs comprised the `B' group. What a great ride for Canucks What a great ride it was, even with Kara Lang and her fellow U-19 Canadian national team members having to settle for a silver medal in the first ever FIFA U-19 women's world championships. The spunky Canucks lost a nail biting 1-0 overtime heart breaker to the heavily favoured American team Sunday before an unprecedented sold out Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. The final was also broadcast live on Sportsnet. It will be back to earth for Lang, however, one of the stars of the Canadian team despite being only 15 years old. It's back to school at St. Thomas Aquinas where she will attend Grade 11. M O M S! The Hockey MOMS Annual Skate and Equipment sale takes place this Friday, 6:30-10 p.m. at Kinoak Arena.
