continued from p.8 Athletes realize achievement is in journey to win Lumsden went and loved the competitive environment. He signed with the Edmonton Eskimos so he could be close to the bobsled training centre. Still, he could have never imagined that he would carry the ball only six more times in his career after injuries prematurely ended each of his next two seasons. The invitation he almost passed up allowed him to continue his athletic career. Now, he can apply the lessons he's learned through his dual-sporting career in high-pressure situations like the Olympics. When the Canadian bobsled coaches decided to switch the crews and pilots the night before the four-man competition in Sochi, Lumsden said it came as a shock, but he quickly realized the goal he and his teammates had been working toward had not changed. "All we can control is being in position to be ready when the time comes," Lumsden said. Like Ruegger, Lumsden did not realize his dream of winning a medal. Ruegger competed for another 12 years trying to make it back to the Olympics, overcoming injuries sustained in a car accident along the way. "People ask, is it worth it?" said Ruegger, who now works with Start2Finish, a charitable organization that works to break the cycle of poverty by providing reading and running programs. "The training, the time, the pain, the adversity, wasn't that a waste? But the highest reward for a person's work is not what he or she gets for it, it's what they become by it." 9 | Friday, March 13, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Yet, Lumsden almost passed on the opportunity that allowed him to continue his athletic career after injuries cut his football career short. The Hamilton Tiger Cats running back was about to become a free agent and was focused on preparing for the next football season when he received an email from Bobsleigh Canada asking him to come to their training camp. His dad, Neil, a CFL Hall of Famer, said, `Why not give it a try." Sweetlegs... Most comfy leggings ever! Made In Canada Professionals, including even lawyers and financial advisers, are regularly hit with emails purporting to seek to retain them for the purposes of collecting an unpaid account or judgment. It can lead to very realistic-looking email correspondence which culminates in a cheque being sent to the individual with instructions that an account should be opened, the cheque deposited and, when it can be cashed, the cash put into an account that is designated by the originator of the email. It's all part of the process for the person retained to complete before the next step in the collection process may be carried out. a Jeffrey r. manishen Lawyers in your corner: Jeffrey Manishen is a Partner at Ross & McBride LLP, practicing in the criminal law group. The problem is that the cheque is fake. What's more, the party depositing it and then cashing it may wind up being charged with fraud. And the originator of the entire transaction is, in the words of Margaret Mitchell, "Gone with the Wind". It may well be that the charge of fraud can be defended on the basis of lack of intent to defraud based on an honest belief in the legitimacy of the transaction but it would be up to the Court to rule on that at trial. Any email that arrives unanticipated, unaddressed personally and seeking assistance in this manner should quickly be deleted, unless you really want to learn how the criminal justice system works and you have some extra cash to spare. I've seen this one too. Regrettably, we've had such cases before the court and I'm sure we'll see more. 905-844-4736 1 King Street West, 10th Floor Hamilton, L8P 1a4 905-526-9800 · www.rossmcbride.com jmanishen@rossmcbride.com www.oakvillevac.com ® The advice offered in this advertorial column is intended for informational purposes only.
