The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 9, 2002 - D3 Erin Mills tourney championship caps off great season The Oakville Phantoms U-l 1 girls capped off a wonderful season by winning the Erin Mills soccer tournament last weekend. The Phantoms defeated Burlington 2-0 in the championship game to capture their fourth tourna ment of the season. The Oakville girls had already captured the South Region premier division league champi onship and the league cup, winning all 23 league and league cup games. Their only blemish this season came in the final of the Oakville tournament, which they lost to Burlington. But it was Oakville's day in the Erin Mills final. Karly Dagys and Alanna Ulbikas led the team in scoring this season and they provided the scoring prowess in the tournament championship game. The Oakville Phantoms U -ll girls rep team. BACK ROW: Scott Tilley (asst, coach), Kim Dagys (trainer), Terry Young (manager) and Peter Uremovich (coach). THIRD ROW: Emily Maganja, Jenna Haydar, Krista Michie, Danielle Jordan and Ali Palmer. SEC OND ROW: Erin Tilley, Jaclyn Alderdice, Nicola Ramsden, Sarah Wojcik, Karly Dagys and Kelsey Young. FRONT ROW: Laurel Greig, Alanna Ulbikas, Taryn McKenna, Angelika Uremovich and Leah Russell. Following a scoreless first half, Ulbikas made it 1-0 after a goal mouth scramble from a comer kick from Kelsey Young. Midfielder Danielle Jordan's header kept the ball in the Burlington zone and Ulbikas was able to put the ball in the net. Dagys put the game out of reach with 10 min utes left in the contest. Midfielder Angelika Uremovich fed the ball off to Young who pushed it up the field to Dagys and her hard shot beat the Burlington keeper. Karly Dagys put on a scoring demonstration in the semifinal game, scoring four goals in a 5-1 drubbing of Erin Mills. The Erin Mills girls tried to play a physical game with Dagys but she rose to the challenge and scored the first four goals of the game. Ulbikas added the other goal. Keeper Taryn McKenna recorded two shutouts in the tournament. Defenders Jenna Haydar, Ali Palmer, Laurel Greig, Jaclyn Alderdice, Erin Tilley and Krista Michie kept the opponents at bay while Angelika Uremovich, Kelsey Young, Danielle Jordan, Nicola Ramsden, Emily Maganja, Leah Russell and Sarah Wojcik controlled the midfield. "Our consistency ail year long has amazed me," said coach Peter Uremovich. "We played tougher opponents this year but still managed to play at a high level regardless of the competition. The Oakville girls demonstrated good skills and great sportsmanship all year long." Pusey scores Golden Goal as Red Devils cap season off with Tom Dunleavy championship The Oakville Red Devils boys U -l5 rep soccer team capped off a great sea son winning the Tom Dunleavy tourna ment of Champions Cup. The prestigious season-ending tour ney pits the South Region League win ners against the Central Soccer League champs. The Red Devils defeated the Woodbridge Strikers 2-1 in overtime with Randy Pusey scoring the Golden Goal. The two teams were tied at 1-1 after regulation with Matt Azevedo scoring for Oakville. The Red Devils The Red Devils, who also won their South Region Elite Division league championship, now move up to the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL) for next year (U-l6). Oakville only suffered one loss in 18 games while allowing only 14 goals against and recording 10 shut outs. Oakville is proving to have a lot of firepower this season, but in the 2-1 win over Buffalo it was goalie Dan Giffin who took centre stage. Only a late goal by Buffalo kept him from notching his first shutout of the year. The 18-year-old suited up with the Blades two years ago, but then moved down to Junior B last season where he saw plenty of rubber playing with the last place Stoney Creek team. "I needed to go somewhere to get more action and more game time," commented Giffin. "In Stoney Creek I saw 40 to 50 shots per night and it improved my game tremendously to the point where I could come back here to feel more comfort able and be number one." Kevin Harvey scored both goals, with helpers going to captain Marc Pinizzotto, Steve Pinizzotto (2), and Scott Russell. "The problem is, when you let a team hang around in a game you always give them the opportunity to get a lucky goal to tie it up" explained Blades coach Jay Anderson. "That's what I was afraid of Friday night when Buffalo scored in the third period." The Blades were a little disappointed to take only a single point out of Brampton given the uncharacteristic slow start to the season for the defending west division champions. "We've developed a bad habit lately of not pushing our selves," said coach Anderson. "We need to raise the bar, so to speak. Instead of just competing each game, depending on our competition, we need to make other teams catch us."
