The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 9, 2002 - A7 Halton police issue warning about home repair scams Halton Regional Police are warning residents to be wary of repair companies that pressure individuals to have work done, or don't do the work promised, after they charged an out-of-town man with fraud. Sgt. Val Hay said police talked with three elderly people last week who claimed a man approached them individ ually about doing repairs to their roofs or driveways. Police say an 84-year-old woman complained to them that a man had told her he had done work to her home's roof and demanded $875. The upset woman told police she had not authorized the work. Burlington Det.-Sgt. Steve Skerrett said the woman did not pay the man and that when officers responded to the scene the man and his crew of two other men were still working on the roof. The woman was aletfed to the worker on Tuesday by a neighbour who observed someone on the woman's roof. Police have charged a 44-year-old Brantford resident with one count of fraud under $5,000. Hay said in the other two similar cases they investigated this week it was too dif ficult to prove if work had or hadn't been done, so no charges were laid. Police say home repair scams often target seniors and involve high-pressure tactics. Among the tips provided by police to avoid being scammed are: * Be wary of people arriving at your door claiming to be in the neighbourhood offering seniors discounts today only; * Demand a few days to think about the job offer. Provincial legislation designed to protect consumers allows 48 hours to change a contract; * Ask for an estimate and call around for at least two others; * Check the company's references. After it was announced in January that the Oakville Truck Plant (OTP) would be closed next year. Ford and the CAW managed to hammer out a deal in which 900 jobs at the facility will be saved. As a result, last weekend's vote in Oakville, Windsor, St. Thomas and Brampton saw 92 per cent of production workers vote in favour of the contract, with skilled trades workers endorsing the contract by 96 per cent. CAW office workers voted in favour as well. `The number one issue of the mem bership was job security, especially in Oakville," said CAW president Buzz Hargrove. "The bargaining committees worked hard to address their concern and the membership vote demonstrated the confidence they had in their bargain ing committees with overwhelming support. 1 am absolutely elated with the vote results." The contract tracks the pattern set earlier with General Motors with wage increases of three per cent, three per cent and two per cent in each year of the contract in addition to cost of living pro tection. Substantial improvements in health care benefits, income security pro grams. time off the job, health and safe ty and other areas of the contract also tracked the GM pattern. The new deal will raise wages to $31.40 per hour for assembly-line workers in 2005 and $37.41 per hour for skilled tradespeople, such as electri cians. Under the new agreement. Ford will extend the life of F-Series pickup pro duction at the OTP through July 2004 a six-month extension of the planned closure date. At that time, the plant will be closed, after which 900 of the OTP's 1,400 workers will staff a third shift at the Oakville Assembly Plant (OAP) where a Mercury version of the Windstar will go into production. This would bring the total number of workers at the OAP to 4.100. Hargrove said the automaker has given the union an "absolute commit ment" that the 900 will remain there through the life of the new collective agreement. The remaining 500 OTP workers with the most seniority will be offered attractive buy-out packages. Committee members instructed Regional Chair Joyce Savoline to write the Premier, Health Minister and local MPPs requesting additional funding. The request comes on the heals of a $9,079 deficit from operating the pro gram last year and an unchanged fund ing model for this season.
