www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, W ednesday N ovem ber 1, 2006 - 5 Oakville United Way gives $65,000 in building grants to 15 agencies Fifteen local agencies recently received a collective $65,000 boost from United Way of Oakville (UWO). The dollars came from UWO's Capacity Building Grants stream, which was established in 2005. The purpose of the grants is to help organizations enhance their capacity to effectively serve the community through a specific program or initiative. Both United Way funded and non-United Way funded agencies were invited to apply. "We need to plan now to ensure that we can meet the needs of our citizens in the next decade and beyond," said Barbara Burton, chief executive officer of United Way of Oakville. "This funding will enable us to support initiatives that strengthen our community's social service capacity." In 2005,11 agencies received a total of $50,000. Seventeen agencies applied for the grants this year, including five nonUnited Way funded agencies. The appli cations were reviewed by United Way staff and members of its Community Impact Cabinet - a group of volunteers that helps guide United Way's community building efforts. Grants were provided for things such as translation of marketing materials, fundraising consultants, strategic plan ning, staff and volunteer training pro grams, updated computer software, and database and website enhancements. Halton TVauma Centre, which pro vides assessment and treatment to chil dren and adolescents who have disclosed, or are being investigated for, child abuse, received $4,500 in support of their out of region `fee for service' consultation pro gram. The program offers clinical con sultation, assessment and treatment serv ices to places like residential treatment facilities and smaller child and youth-oriented agencies, within the province of Ontario, that do not have access to this kind of specialized care. "As a result of the grant from United Way of Oakville," said Darryl Hall, execu tive director, "Halton Trauma Centre will be able to develop a business plan and marketing materials, which will be essen tial to the effective delivery of this pro gram." The program will not only raise funds for the Halton TVauma Centre (the agen cies will pay them a small fee for their services), but it will also help build the centre's capacity to serve the community - both the Oakville community and beyond. Bereaved Families o f OntarioHalton/Peel, which is a non-United Way funded agency that provides bereavement counselling to those grieving the loss of a loved one, received $4,000 for a fund development consultant "We are so pleased to be a recipient of a United Way Capacity Building Grant," said Linda Ger Walters, executive director of Bereaved Families of OntarioHalton/Peel. "As a critical, communitybased organization, we value and appreci ate how this fund will enhance our fundraising efforts and greatly help our commitment to building capacity and sustainability. Ultimately, through strengthening our capacity, we can better serve our community and those who are bereaved." Grants were also provided to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, Family Adolescent Straight Tklk (FAS.T.), Food for Life Canada, Halton Child & Youth Services, Halton Family Services, Kerr Street Community Services, MS SocietyHalton Chapter, Oakpark Moms & Tots, Oakville Literacy Council, Oakville Parent-Child Centre, Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services of Halton (SAVIS), Transitions for Youth and Victorian Order of Nurses Halton. From A.DAP.T. to The Women's Centre, UWO supports more than 30 health and social service agencies annual ly that provide support in these five serv ice areas: children and youth, community advocacy and planning, families and indi viduals in crisis, services for the elderly, and health and rehabilitation. United Way of Oakville also works with key partners on various community building initia tives intended to enhance the social serv ice sector in Oakville. LEARN TO SKATE W ITH U S!
