www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, April 10, 2015 | 4 Anti-human trafficking conference this weekend by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Sheridan College will host a weekend focused on creating awareness and discussion around the modern slave trade that is human trafficking beginning today (Friday). The free events, which are being held at the Marquee student pub, 1430 Trafalgar Rd., by the Christian-based non-profit organization Partners International, are intended to raise awareness of and action against human traf- ficking on a global scale. The group noted combating the crime is essential because with four million people, including 1.2 million children, being trafficked every year, there are more people in slavery today than at any other time in history. Organizers emphasize human trafficking is not something that happens far from home. Partners International's first Sheridan event runs from 7-9:30 p.m. and features the screening of Nefarious: Merchant of Souls Documentary. Written, directed and produced by Benjamin Nolot, the film examines the disturbing trends of modern-day-sex slavery showing where slaves are sold (often in developed, affluent countries), where they work, and where they are confined. Filmed in 19 different countries, the documentary also features the testimonials of human trafficking survivors and features stories outlining how people were recruited into a life of slavery, how they were freed and much more. The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion by human trafficking experts from around the world. Tomorrow's (Saturday) event, which runs from 7-9 p.m., features presentations by Smita Singh, director of the Mahima Home in India and Vladimir Ubeivolc, leader of Beginning Life in Moldova. Both individuals run organizations that actively help girls and women who have been rescued from the sex trade. For more information, visit http:// partnersinternational.ca/events/ restoredoverview.
