Gallant said his game took a leap forward last summer, the first in which he had fully dedicated himself to hockey. Previously, Gallant had spent his summers on the ball diamond, playing for the Oakville A's AAA team. The Ontario Blue Jays, a top team in the Premier Baseball League of Ontario, were interested in having Gallant pitch for them. However, a dislocated shoulder last April put an end to his baseball season. It didn't prevent him from working on his game on the ice, though, and he quickly saw the benefits. "I feel like my entire skill set improved," the Oakville Trafalgar High School student said. "My shot, my skating, everything." Gallant returned to the Mississauga Rebels where he scored 24 goals and had 58 points in 62 games, drawing rave reviews from scouts for his skating, work ethic and two-way game. He earned a three-game call-up to the Ontario Junior Hockey League's Oakville Blades, where he scored just six minutes into his first junior game and then added a goal and an assist in his next. Gallant said his stint with the Blades will help him in the transition to the OHL, where he'll be playing against bigger, faster and older players. Meanwhile, the Canada Games gave him the chance to play with and against the best players in his age group, including 11 of the first 15 picks in the OHL draft on the Ontario roster. And bringing home the gold medal -- Gallant scored in Ontario's 3-1 win over Alberta in the final -- made the experience that much better. "Even to make that team -- it's only held every four years so most players don't even have the opportunity -- it's once in a lifetime." Now Gallant has another opportunity in front of him. He'll head to the Petes' development camp in a couple of weeks and then their main camp in the August. Having seen last summer's efforts pay off, Gallant is no longer putting any limits on what he can achieve. "I worked hard to put myself in a position to be successful," he said. "I just have to keep doing that and I hope to have a shot at making the NHL one day." 20% Alexia Chaise Lounger Reg. $199.99 See store for details.
