Oakville, recently recognized as a youth-friendly community by the independent group Play Works, is more than ready for Youth Week (May 1-8) with lots of local activities planned. Play Works, a group that encourages and promotes a greater investment in youth play, recognized Oakville with a gold designation for demonstrating 14 of 16 youth-friendly community criteria. Oakville is proving it deserves recognition as a youth-friendly town It celebrates Ontario communities that provide youths, aged 13 to 19, with diverse play opportunities -- arts, recreation or civic leadership. The Town will celebrate Youth Week with activities taking place at public facilities. Highlights include a Tune up Music Night, Skateboarding at Kinoak, an Art Battle, gym drop-ins, games and movie night, drama workshop and career night. This year's Youth Week will also feature a Twitter contest where youth are encouraged to take a photo at any youth week event and share it on Twitter with #oakvilleyouth for a chance to win more than $100 in gift cards. A complete list of events and contest details are available at www.oakville.ca. In addition to the scheduled events, Oakville secondary school students will have free access to the fitness centre at Iroquois Ridge, Glen Abbey, River Oaks and Queen Elizabeth Park community centres during Youth Week.
