Church anniversary to be celebrated with mass and dinner May 9 continued from p.16 "Initially, when I came here in 2001, it was all senior citizens. They actually had to put chairs in the aisles because of the number of people that came. The mix of people was certainly a major change in the parish here," said Coughlin. Among the other changes Coughlin has seen is the "spiritual development" of the congregation, he said. "I told people I wanted them to get close to Jesus. I didn't care how they did it, but they were to do it. It's been a very prayerful congregation. There has been a lot of liturgical growth as well," said Coughlin, noting there will be a new pastor joining the church in June. Even though he's retired from active pastoral duties, Coughlin hopes the church will continue to grow as a "spiritual hothouse," he said, as it offers a range of different services and programs. "People are always being challenged to grow and move out of their comfort zone to become fully alive in faith. The theme for this celebration is faith in action, which is what the focus has been all the way through this," said Coughlin. "The church has been well-loved by people because of its size, its intimacy... the parish has been very warm. They've been an amazing congregation and they're receptive. I would really like to see that continue." The celebration of Holy Mass will take place Saturday, May 9 at St. Andrew church, 47 Reynolds St., at 4:45 p.m. The dinner and reception will be held following the ceremony at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph's Ukrainian Banquet and Conference Centre, 300 River Oaks Blvd. E. Tickets to the dinner/reception cost $65 each and can be purchased from Wayne Kendall.
