One shot away from gold, team settles for silver medal The Oakville Hornets bantam BB rep hockey team were one shot away from capturing the gold medal as they lost in a shootout that went seven shoot ers in the Peterborough tourney, over the Nov. 29-Dec. 1 weekend. Oakville thought they had broken a scoreless draw against the host Peterborough team in regulation time in the championship game but the whistle blew just before the puck crossed the line. Missy Kennedy, who scored in the penalty shot round, picked up Oakville's MVP honours. Here's a tourney recap. OAKVILLE 2, Etobicoke Dolphins 0: Megan Wanless picked up the first of her two goals near the end of the second period after Missy Kennedy won the draw deep in the Dolphin end. Brittany Parkyn fired on net, and Wanless cashed in the rebound. Wanless then iced the game by notching an empty net goal with just 24 seconds left on the clock. Justine Bernier picked up the lone assist. Peterborough 3, OAKVILLE 0: well deserved win by Peterborough. OAKVILLE 2, Burlington 0: knowing a win assured them of a place in the championship, the Hornets went hard and often at the Burlington net, only to be stymied time and again by the Barracudas' hot goaltending. Justine Bemier picked up the winner three minutes into the game when she banked a shot off a Barracuda defender. The lone assist went to Megan Cordeiro. Missy Kennedy added the insurance marker with just over three minutes remaining when she was able to get around the defence and beat the goalie from in close as she got it up over the goalie. Tenille Clarke picked up the assist. LEAGUE PLAY Etobicoke Dolphins 3, OAKVILLE 1: Megan Wanless got the Hornets on the board midway through the first period as she converted a nice cross-ice pass from Justine Bemier. However, the Dolphins tied it up before the period ended, and added two more in the second period to seal the win. The bantam BB Oakville Hornets would like to thank their sponsors: Halton Signs, Tim Hortons & Royal Bank. Denman, Eustace, Hadfield are strong defensively in 5-1 win Here's a recap of recent action for the Oakville Hornets atom AA rep team. Brampton 3, OAKVILLE 2 (Nov. 29): Oakville was outplayed in the first period but still managed to open the scoring in the second period. Brampton replied with three straight and Oakville scored with one minute left to make things interesting. Oakville goals were scored by Hayleigh Cudmore and Erika Iosue. Assists went to Hayley Good and Mia Favretto. Brampton outshot the Hornets 27-10. OAKVILLE 2. W illowdale Red Wings 0 (Nov. 30): Brittany A ldworth notched the shutout while goals w ere scored by A shley M cC arthy and Hayleigh Cudm ore. Overtime heroes After rolling through the round robin portion of the recent Weston Hawks tourney with relative ease, the Oakville Rangers atom A rep team needed double over time in their semifi nal game and a last minute goal in the tournament champi onship to claim the title from a rejuve nated Applewood team. The return engagement with the Applewood Cree was far more wor thy of a champi onship game than the one sided round robin game won by Oakville. The Applewood netminder and both Oakville goalies stoned all attempts to gain the upper hand, and as the teams tired in the third period it looked like another overtime nailbiter was imminent. However, this time game MVP John Nardozzi got to be the hero, as he rifled home the win ner with only 60 ticks left on the clock. Wesley Brown earned the assist as he smartly kept the puck in at the point, leading to the winning score. The semifinal game went into dou ble overtime before Oakville managed to eke out a 3-2 win over host West Hawks. It was the only lead of the game for Oakville. Daniel Tavares (assist to Dalton Newsom) and James Smith were the only Rangers able to solve the Weston netminder in regulation time. In the first over time. the play was all in the Hawks end, but still no one could pot the win ner. Teams were reduced to four skaters for the sec ond O.T., and it only took Josh Wiley 14 seconds to become the hero, banging home a rebound on a blast from Adam Davis.
