Union Gas donation gives downtown Cultural Hub a boost by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, May 1, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Downtown Oakville Cultural Hub project got a boost as Union Gas gave it a $40,000 donation during Monday's Town council meeting. The funds will cover the cost of a series of outdoor cultural programs and events that will begin in June. These events include weekly entertainment, programs and cultural activities at Centennial Square, a weekly farmers market and one-off events. "These programs would expand the many services already offered by Oakville at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and it would enter us into new markets and services that respond to the many suggestions received through the cultural hub consultation over the last two years," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "These programs are scheduled to be launched in June and run until October." Burton said Union Gas recently approached the Town wishing to sponsor the full cost of the new programming through their Community Investment Fund. Those present heard from Oakville resident and Hamilton/Halton Union Gas district manager Marc EgbedeyiEmmanuel, who said the donation is in keeping with what Union Gas is trying to achieve in the communities it does business in. "Oakville has been focused on developing the strategies and plans that will strengthen the cultural presence in the downtown core and ensure the long term viability of cultural facilities within Oakville," said Egbedeyi-Emmanuel. "Today we are very pleased to assist Oakville in moving from plan to reality." He said Union Gas is committed to investing in the communities it serves through a comprehensive community relations program that sees donations to charitable organizations, sponsorships, in-kind contributions and more. "Simply put, we are investing in making life better here in Oakville and throughout the Union Gas areas where we do business," said Egbedeyi-Emmanuel. The Downtown Oakville Cultural Hub project seeks to revitalize the downtown and explore opportunities to create a downtown cultural and performing arts space including: a performing arts centre, art gallery, library, outdoor program space, and indoor cultural space or digital hub.
