We are in the process of soliciting feedback, with the goal of final approval in March. The draft includes a vision of "Helping You Reach N ew Heights, " and the mission statement affirms that we intend "To be a leader and innovator that promotes the growth and I prosperity o f business." The Strategic Plan outlines the Chamber's fundamental goals and objectives, as well as detailed strategies and actions. The key elements of our draft Plan include the following strategies and actions. · Investigate and develop new sources of revenue generation to offset the costs of (a) operating the Chamber of Commerce and (b) the Visitor Information Centre, and (c) fund new and expanded programs and services. · Devise and implement an ongoing means of researching and analyzing data and issues of importance to the Chamber. (We need to ensure that we know our "market.") · Survey the local business community with respect to needs, desires and expectations, in order to fine-tune programs and services, anticipate market trends and retain I increase membership. · Formulate a detailed marketing plan geared to retaining existing members and attracting new members. · Formulate and implement a comprehensive communications plan (ensure we get the word out most effectively). · Improve office facilities with adequate office and boardroom space, preferably with room to hold more events on-site. · Initiate a CEO Business Forum to attract and involve more large businesses in the Oakville Chamber. · Play a stronger advocacy role for all businesses, large, medium and small. · Develop meaningful strategic partnerships to enhance cost-efficiencies and eliminate duplication and overlap. (We believe there is scope for collaborating with others to resolve common issues, achieve common objectives and save money.) · Structure the Chamber organization along functional lines. y In terms of structure, we intend to reorganize our processes into three functional Teams which will focus on increasing our relevance and value to: 1) the business community at large, including members and non-members alike, 2) our members specifically, and 3) the Chamber itself from an internal organizational perspective. Each of these three functional Teams will be dedicated to the following specific activities, supported by Task Forces: · Business Services Team - including task forces dedicated to Advocacy, Education and Training, Awards and Promotion. · Member Services Team - with Services, Events and Benefits task forces. · Chamber Support Team - with task forces dedicated to Marketing, Communications, Information Technology, Research and Analysis. We propose that several of the task forces come together on an as-needed, rather than standing, basis. Currently our Committees meet every month. Under the new structure, some task forces will come together for special projects and to initiate or undertake certain short-term assignments consistent with our key objectives (e.g., Marketing Plan, Communications Plan, international trade events, etc.) As we each consider the Strategic Plan, we should reflect upon what the elements of the mission statement signify to us in the context of the Plan. For example, how can we best demonstrate leadership and innovation in terms of our participation as members of the Chamber, of the Board, as other volunteers and staff? How can we best contribute to the growth and prosperity of our Chamber Members and our business community? How can we ensure that our service to business embraces the full spectrum, from the large multi-nation als to the home-based entrepreneur and everything in between? The next few months will continue to be a period of transition to position the Chamber to meet the challenges of the 21 st century. I again invite each of you to become partners in the changes as we move forward. i REPORT Brian Barrington, President .
