Yet, we constantly hear and read about Oakville's "charming and historic" downtown, a description that is meant to appeal Letter to the Editor WE MAKE CUSTOM FOOT ORTHOTICS! Why then don't we focus on protecting that historic character? We have plenty of beautiful examples of modern design in newer parts of Oakville. These same advocates for the contemporary tend to seek an entirely new design/ build for the library and OCPA, but I would argue that our centennial buildings should be maintained as an organic part of the town's architectural character and timeline. I think we could learn something from Niagara-on-the-Lake, `Canada's prettiest town.' Oakville has more substance to offer than Niagara-on-the-Lake, to be sure, and in any case, we've done too good a job of destroying our historic buildings to emulate that kind of success, but we could still try to create one community hub that acknowledges -- in its contextualization, design and street furniture -- our 200 years of history here in Oakville. Focusing on that history would create a coherent, attractive ambiance and a celebration of our past which a mixture of historic and modern elements almost certainly would not.
