Kind-hearted man's contribution to charity remembered in kind by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 15 | Thursday, August 6, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com For years, he supported charity golf tournaments benefitting Halton Women's Place. Now, friends of the late Tom Hopkins will support the Burlington man's family by holding a golf tournament in his honour Saturday, Aug. 22. Long-time Oakville resident, and organizer of the annual Turnbull Aquarium Golf Tournament, Brian Turnbull said Hopkins was there for him 21 years ago when he held the inaugural tournament to benefit Halton Women's Place, a non-profit organization devoted to assisting abused women and their dependent children. Hopkins, who worked for Fine Line Signs in Hamilton, not only played in the tournament, he also made all signs required for it at no charge. "The first year I raised $600," said Turnbull. "Now after 21 years, I have raised $263,000." Throughout it all, Turnbull said, Hopkins was there. "Over the initial 14-year period, he donated more than 100 signs. That created the image of this great event," Turnbull said. "He played every tournament for 20 years until July 2014." Turnbull said last summer Hopkins took his wife, Francine, and their three children, Jordon, 15, Corey, 19, and Ryan, 24, on a family vacation to North Bay. They attended a family reunion, but sadly the vacation ended tragically Aug. 18, 2014 when Hopkins suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 53. "He was a real easy-going guy. He would do anything for anyone. He was just really kindhearted," said Steve Turnbull, Hopkins' best friend and tournament organizer. "He enjoyed golf a lot. That was one of his passions. He was a big sports fan, loved the Leafs. His favourite NFL team was the Giants. He just had a heart of gold and I dearly miss him." To remember his friend, Steve is organizing the Tom Hopkins (or "Homer", as he was nicknamed) Memorial Open. The event will be held at Mount Hope's Chippewa Creek Golf Club, 9639 Chippewa Creek Rd. Tee-off is at 1 p.m. Those interested in participating can sponsor a hole for $200 or play a round of golf for $55, cart included. A special passport can also be purchased for $20 for more golf course bonuses and prize-winning opportunities. For an additional $30, those who attend can enjoy a prime rib dinner at Gator Ted's in Burlington. All proceeds will be donated to Hopkins' family.
