Wednesday April 4. 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B5 Butterfly Project helps raise $53,000 for Dreams Take Flight Christian will never be well enough to go to Disney World. He would have been a student at St. Dominic's, but is too sick to go to school. He will never play field hockey. But this little boy, almost eight years old, has made a difference to so many lives. He is, in no small part, the inspira tion behind the Dream-a-Thon, an annu al charity organized by The Oakville Field Hockey Club. In addition to raising funds through pledges to its members who played a marathon indoor field hockey match, and a silent auction, The Oakville Field Hockey Club embarked on The Butterfly Project. It was the idea of Christian's mother, Vmnie Di Rollo. "The butterfly is a beautiful symbol of what the OFHC's Dream-a-Thon is all about," said Di Rollo. "So many unfortunate children live a daily life like that of the lowly caterpillar or the con fined cocoon. But there's always hope; there's the promise of beauty and of fly ing, that a dream will come true. And that's what The Oakville Field Hockey Club wants for these unfortunate chil dren - to help make a dream come true." The club raised more than $30,000 at the second annual Dream-a-Thon at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School for Air Canada's Dreams Take Flight, a charity that gives children who are suf fering from a physical or mental disabil ity, children from a seriously disadvan taged home life, and children who are terminally ill, a single day of fun and adventure at Florida's Disney World. But for the past several weeks, but terflies - more than 8,000 of them have been taking flight in many schools in Oakville. And the sale of these butter flies, at $2 each, has allowed the OFHC to raise their donation to Dreams Take Flight from $26,000 last year, to more than $53,000 this year. The Butterfly Project took off in 13 Oakville Catholic elementary schools, as well as St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Ignatius of Loyola secondary schools. Three public elementary schools also participated, as did Queen Elizabeth Park School. Although one of the small er elementary schools (a little over 500 students) St. Dominic's sold more than 500 butterflies. And a beautiful display to advertise the campaign was raffled off among the staff for a total of more than $1,300. "The response has been amazing," said Di Rollo, Dream-a-Thon chairper son. "Some people thought I was crazy ordering 10,000 of these lovely orna ments. Now we've actually run short." She emphasized the motive behind The Butterfly Project was to "give kids a chance to help kids." According to Dreams Take Flight national president, Bill Sanderson, OFHC has made a huge difference. "Last year we were able to take one plane and 200 children," he said. "This year, largely due to the efforts of The Oakville Field Hockey Club and the generosity of the community of Oakville, we are able to take two planes and more than 300 young people." Sanderson goes on to note, "It's no longer what Air Canada does. It's what goes on in the communities. And Oakville is a wonderful example of that." The Oakville Field Hockey Club "is delighted." Said its founder and general caretaker, John Picone, "it's not just us, the OFHC. It's not just Vinnie or me or Ross or JC or Marisa. All we wanted was to make the people - especially the children - of Oakville aware of the need, and provide an opportunity for them to make a difference. We did. And so did they. Way to go, Oakville." There were some serious financial concerns with last year's flight, com mented Carrol Moorcroft, treasurer of Dreams Take Flight. "It was getting close to the deadline and I just didn't know how we were going to make ends meet. I was pretty worried. Then Bill (Sanderson) gave me this cheque from The Oakville Field Hockey Club for a staggering amount. Well, I cried all night." Air Canada has given the club at least 20 seats on the plane for children from Oakville. "They are able to enjoy this dream because their peers have helped them," said Di Rollo. "That's what it's all about. Kids helping kids." "It's good to know that I am helping people and giving something back to the Photo by Barrie Erskine Christopher Langlois, left, co-prime minister and Sara Glover, communications, from the St. Dom inic's School Student Council, present a cheque for $1,266 from the sale of more than 500 butterflies, for $2 each, in the school, to Vinnie Di Rollo, chairperson of Dream-a-Thon, a fundraiser for Air Canada's Dreams Take Flight. community," writes Christopher Langois, a Grade 8 student at St. Dominic's. Grade 6 students Marissa Brennan and Chris Busseri write: "During this wonderful project we have discovered that there are many people around us that need a dream to come true. We hope that with this, amazing project we helped that to happen."
