The coyote was spotted at about 9:15 a.m., with police responding a short time later. Officers said the coyote displayed no aggressive behavior and ultimately wandered back into a wooded area. While the animal was gone by the time Mittelholtz arrived on the scene, she said those who saw it described it as being in good health, but appearing disoriented. "There could be a million explanations. He could have just been lost, he could have been young," she said. "As we continue on with urban sprawl, we see coyotes and foxes become more bold and less fearful of humans so that could have something to do with it as well." This incident follows an apparent hike in coyote activity in Oakville as they've recently been sighted on Bridge Road, as well as Rebecca and Hixon streets. The Town of Oakville scheduled an information meeting on coyotes tonight (Thursday, Aug. 20) at the Queen Elizabeth Community and Cultural Centre on Bridge Rd., from 7-8:30 p.m. Julia Pietrus from the Toronto Wildlife Centre and Laura Mackasey from the OMHS were scheduled to join Town staff to share with residents how they can peacefully coexist with local wildlife. Residents will also be reminded what to do if they encounter a coyote. According to Halton Region, there are approximately 500 reports of encounters between coyotes, residents and their pets each year in Halton. Residents and pet owners are advised to be extra vigilant when walking in city parks or green spaces, specifically in areas where there were noted sightings. Take precautions, including keeping your pet leashed at all times and disposing of garbage and other potential food items in the appropriate bins. Most importantly, never feed a coyote or approach a coyote, its den or pups. If a coyote approaches you, do not run or turn your back on a coyote. Appear large and aggressive while making loud noises. Use whistles and personal alarm devices to frighten them. Slowly back away. If you feel you are in danger, call 911. The Town of Oakville has an online coyote reporting system that it encourages residents to use to report an encounter, someone feeding coyotes or a problem with food waste or garbage. It tracks the information provided through the system to assess areas with increased coyote activity and eliminate human-based food sources for coyote.
