www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 3, 2015 | 20 Cameron says she wishes more women would consider flying as a career continued from p.6 The pilot said a flight attendant brought her a tray with her favourite cup of tea, and epaulets and wings for her uniform, to signify she was a captain. Volunteering with Dreams Take Flight -- which, with the aid of Air Canada, provides the trip of a lifetime to medically, mentally, physically, socially or emotionally challenged children -- and flying children to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., was also an experience of a lifetime for her. However, the day Cameron retired was truly special as she got to share it with her husband, one of her two daughters and some close friends. As the captain taxied to her gate at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, she received the water cannon salute typical of a retiring pilot. Even more special was the armed guard, made up of 19 female air pilots, that formed as she walked across the bridge. Cameron said she wishes more women would consider flying as a career. "The numbers haven't increased as much as I would like," she said, pointing out that only four to five per cent of pilots in North America are women. The pilot admitted flight training is expensive, but if it's something you want to do, you should find a way to do it. Cameron used her student loans to pay for some of the flying expenses and practised the budgeting skills she'd learned from her mom, who'd been a single parent. "Be persistent and don't let anyone dismay you. If you want to fly, it's worth the effort," she advised women with similar aspirations. NLAF president Anna Pangrazzi said Cameron's story serves as inspiration for all women. "Her early history says a lot. She was very tenacious. She went to an aviation college and went to the North where she knew the jobs were, did what it took to get the experience and didn't take no for an answer," she said. Pangrazzi hopes it will encourage young women to enter the field in which the numbers of women continue to remain low compared to those in other, traditionally male-dominated professions, such as medicine, law and engineering. She's also inviting those who are interested to learn more about women in aviation and aerospace to attend the gala, which is open to the public. Tickets range in cost from $65-$99. Maryse Carmichael, former commander of the Snowbirds, will deliver the keynote address. For more information, visit www. northernlightsaward.ca.
