While nearly 10,000 Ontarians depend on life-sustaining dialysis treatments several times a week, more than 1,000 are waiting for a kidney transplant, and countless others live with reduced kidney function that may have gone undetected. "There are a lot of people out there that need a lot of support," Newman said of why people should participate in the Kidney Walk, which takes place Saturday (Sept. 19) at the Bronte Creek Provincial Park's Breckon Shelter, 3201 Upper Middle Rd. W. Newman says, as a peer support mentor, the common mentality he sees from those he speaks to is: "My life's over" -- especially if it's their first serious illness diagnosis. "It's pretty devastating," Newman said of kidney disease, but he stresses it's not a death sentence and it can get better.
