Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton (CCAH) hosts ninth annual celebration The ninth annual Roots of Freedom Festival, set for next week, hopes to leave residents with a better understanding of Oakville and Halton's roles in the historical transition from slavery to freedom, say its organizers. The two-day festival is presented by the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton and Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate, Oct. 21-22. This year's special guests include: Michele A. Johnson and Michael St. George. Johnson is the director of the Harriet Tubman Institute, and a fellow at the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) -- both at York University. She is currently associate professor in the Department of History at York University where she teaches a variety of courses that focus on "Blacks in the Americas." Inspired by his working-class upbringing in Kingston, Jamaica, dub poet George's work is dedicated to justice and social equity. On Wednesday, Oct. 21, Johnson will host a presentation on the 150th anniversary of the Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica at Sheridan College's Conference Centre, 1410 Trafalgar Rd. The talk runs from 7-8:30 p.m. Oakville Museum, 8 Navy St., will host 45-minute walking tours, starting from 6:30 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 22. The day will also include an interactive exhibit at the local museum, The Underground Railroad: Next Stop Freedom. The exhibit celebrates the heritage of Black Canadians in the community. The festival is free to attend, however, donations will be accepted at the door. For more information, visit visitrootsoffreedomfestival. com. rootsoffreedomfestival.com.
