Public board says a school must be included in Saw-Whet plan continued from p.3 Lyons said, to date, there has been insufficient study done for the Town to have confidence the proposed development would represent good land use planning. The Town is in the process of addressing flooding in the area and believes the Bronte Green development would make that flooding worse, said Lyons. The Town also has concerns about endangered and threatened species that live in the area, such as the redside dace, snapping turtles and milk snakes. Lyons said the developer needs to show the proposed project would not harm the habitat of the endangered redside dace, which lives in nearby Fourteen Mile Creek, and the current plan shows development on what is the existing habitat for milk snakes and snapping turtles. The Town also takes issue with roadways within the proposed development, stating they would not allow for an appropriate flow of traffic and would offer insufficient connectivity to the lands to the south. Lyons said the Town would call around 30 witnesses to make its case that more work needs to be done to figure out best land uses for the area. The Region of Halton, represented by Stephen Waque, also spoke out against Bronte Green's development plan. Waque said there is a sewer line that passes under the Bronte Green site that services a wide area of Oakville and Milton. He noted this sewer was built with the belief there would always be a golf course above it and as such it was not designed to support roads or buildings. Waque said damage to that sewer line is not an option, noting there is no other route for the sewage to go. If there was a collapse, he said, there would be massive consequences as that sewage system would simply cease to function. Waque argued Bronte Green not dealing with this critical issue in its planning shows "just how premature its development application is." Representatives with the Halton District School Board and Conservation Halton decided to hold off on making their opening statements until they present their cases against the development. The Halton District School Board has said a school needs to be included in the developer's plans. The hearing is expected to continue for the next three weeks and then recess until January 2016, at which point it will resume for a further two weeks. 7 | Friday, October 16, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com OAKVILLE 399 SPEERS ROAD · 905-844-8010 2311 ROYAL WINDSOR DRIVE · 905-337-1533 FALL MEGA SALE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 17 ONLY SCRATCH & SAVE 15 100 % TO % on all your in-store purchases* of $75 or more (before taxes). *Valid on regular price products only.
