By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR H e's only 12 years o f age, but on the weekend he earned one of sports most coveted achievements -- a perfect game. Paul Jurgaitis, a grade six student at St. Luke's in Oakville, pitched a per fect game on Sunday, retiring the side -- three up, three down -- in each of the regulation six innings, to face the minimum possible 18 batters. And it all transpired, in a quality pre-season Little League tournament against a quality opponent from Brant County in a key semifinal game. The Oakville Little League major all-star team won the game 4-0. Oakville did go on to lose the tour nament championship, in a real barn burner, 2-1 to host Ancaster. "It's kind of funny," explained the boy's mother, Ilona Jurgaitis, "his dad -- my husband -- was going on a business trip on Sunday. "So he knew that Paul was pitching, so he said `Paul' hurry up, do the job, three-up, three-down, so I can watch the entire game. "I guess he took his words to heart," she said, laughing. Paul knew he had something special going "kind of near the fourth inning." His first thoughts were a coveted no-hitter, quickly followed by the real ization he was also working on an even rarer perfect game. "TTie first three innings, I got all strikeouts," he explained. In the fourth inning, he continued, "they didn't get a hit off me but they touched the ball. And they grounded out twice and then I struck another one out." Going out for the fifth inning, he said his teammates were getting excit ed. "I wasn't talking to anybody." He then struck out the side. In the sixth and final inning o f the game, he conceded, "I was kind of ner vous because I figure if I screwed up I wouldn't have a perfect game." The co chairs -- M erritt Goddard, M arie Cumming and Don Vince (bottom) -- are also spearheading a lot of work as they have set an impressive target of $60,000. Last year a record $45,000 was handed over to OTMH. The always popular tournament will be held this year on Wednesday, August 22, at Wylewood G olf and Country Club. S E E F U LL STORY, PAGE D3.
