Wednesday, June 13, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 CONNECTIONS team raises target to $60,000 This year's 22nd annual Oakville Beaver charity golf tournament in support o f O akville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) will be held this year on Wednesday, August 22 at Wyldewood Golf Course, which, as usual, has chipped in its fine links. There's a new driving force behind the tournament, this year, with the torch being taken over by CONNEC TIONS, an association of three estab lished local Oakville firms who are specialists in asset growth and risk management. The three firms are Vince Tomenson Dickerson Insurance Brokers; Assante; and Cumming & Cumming Wealth M anagement. T hey're located at 1540 Cornwall Road. They're taking over from the Royal Bank Financial Group in Oakville, under whose long and able steward ship, the tournament, last year, broke through the $500,000 milestone in money handed over to OTMH. The Royal Bank Financial Group in Oakville stepped in with their consid erable volunteer resources to help Geoff Hill, the Oakville Beaver's cir culation manager (since retired) who kicked off the tournament, along with publisher Kirk Simpson back in 1980. Hill still tees it up for this long run ning charity tournament, and he's typi cal of a loyal contingent that keeps coming back, having found this tourna ment a most enjoyable way to con tribute to our community hospital. And that's why, when another expected capacity field tees it up again this year, it will be business -- or should we say leisure! -- as usual. Familiarity certainly doesn't breed contempt when it's a looked-forwardto, once-a-year golf date! The only changes will be of the on-going, finetuning variety. A smooth running golf tournament, of course, almost always means a flur ry of good old fashioned work below the surface. And the CONNECTIONS group have had their sleeves rolled on up on this volunteer project for months. They bring with them considerable volunteer experience at organizing golf tourna ments on their committee, with a cou ple of them from Assante heading up the Premier Golf Tournament, which this year is being held in support of Ian Anderson House (a six-bed residential hospice in Oakville that offers quality end-of-life palliative care to families in our community who, for whatever rea son, are unable to provide the neces sary round-the-clock care at home to a family member who has terminal can cer). The Royal Bank Financial Group is also represented on the CONNEC TIONS com m ittee, providing their invaluable experience at running the golf tournament for many years, as, of course, are representatives from Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (with their considerable volunteer resources) and the Oakville Beaver. This has prompted the CONNEC TIONS volunteer team, which is co chaired by Don Vince, Marie Cumming and Merritt Goddard to push the goal to $60,000 from last year's record $45,000 amount. For anyone wanting to chip in for this lofty goal, there are many ways to help out, from gifts for the always well-stocked prize table to becoming an official sponsor, with many levels available. And, of course, by teeing it up on Wednesday, August 22, in support of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. For info, or to help out, please call Don Vince at 845-9793. C O N N EC TIO NS... In 1993 Merritt Goddard, vice pres ident and senior financial advisor with Assante Capital Management (former ly the Equion Group) opened up an office in downtown Oakville, as did Bruce and M arie Cumming of Cumming & Cumming Wealth Management three years ago. Prior to that time, each had operated their respective businesses in downtown Toronto. Vince Tomenson Dickerson began almost 50 years ago as a small family business in Oakville, with Don Vince joining as president in 1972. Still based in Oakville, Vince Tomenson Dickerson has gradually grown to its present status today as one of the largest general and commercial insur ance brokers in Ontario. Over the past few years, the three local financial services firms had been offering informal assistance to each other's clients. Based on this success and the response from their clients, the three firms formed a stronger alliance late last year and established CONNEC TIONS to represent their newly estab lished formal association. Through the strength of the three firm's combined expertise, association and location, CONNECTIONS is able to offer the combination of big city smarts and savvy with small town val ues, conveniences and friendliness. · Vince Tomenson Dickerson spe cializes in managing risk for the quali ty-conscious insurance buyer; · Assante specializes in providing personalized financial planning ser vices for inter-generational wealth management; · Cumming and Cumming special izes in providing customized life insur ance to meet complex financial needs. All three firms have been very active in supporting the Oakville com munity. Collectively, they have been very involved either as partners in charity fundraising, as volunteers, or by serv ing on the board of directors for many local organizations such as: the Oakville W aterfront Festival; the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts; Ian Anderson House; Halton Women's Place; the Heart and Stroke Foundation; and Rotary International.
