He said the key to a successful and smooth move is people staying in their assigned roles. "For the day, we have identified specific roles and responsibilities for different team leads, different teams of people and individuals. Staying in those roles and not doing more than what has been asked of you, but making sure you do what is asked of you for the day is what is needed," said Quinlan. "Patient care is primary and is the top responsibility. All this planning and all these logistics that go around this is to make sure the patient care is taken care of." For the mock move, Quinlan consulted with HHS staff, Halton EMS and others about the moving of three fictitious patients: one from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), another from the Maternity Unit and a third from the Mental Health Unit. cater to a variety of patients. An ICU patient has very different needs (i.e. life support equipment) than a mental health patient. The mock move weighed variables, such as how many patients will require portable ventilators, how many portable ventilators the hospital has available and where it can get more, if need be. Quinlan admitted lessons were definitely learned from the exercise. Some details, like the exit routes to be used, were confirmed while others, such as what elevators certain patients will use, were re-examined. "The staff here are very engaged in the process and they had lots of input on their specific needs," he said. "We came back with not just one thing to look at, but lots of input. Lots of minor tweeks. Lots of things that worked great for the mock that everybody agreed on and some other things people didn't agree 100 per cent on, but we still have to make a decision as to how the process is going to work." Eight Halton and Peel ambulances, featuring advanced life support services, will participate in the transfer. These will mainly focus on moving the ICU patients. The move will also utilize 20 RNR Patient Transfer Services vehicles, which feature basic life support services. see Everyone on p.11 Halton Region Paramedic Services paramedics Mike Butt, left, and Bill Hetherington wheel a stretcher to the second-floor Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Reynolds Street Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Monday.
