I take to shopping like a fish takes to dry land and, in my extensive experience, most men are like me. Still, Christmas approaches, fast and furious. So, all of our merry resting and rejuvenating had to be truncated for some shopping. To make the experience less painful, we avoided the malls and went to the Toronto Christmas Market, a festive open-air street market on the fabulous cobblestone streets of The Distillery District. While my wife shopped, I did more manly things, like standing outside the shops beside other men, holding bags and bags of purchases, while trying not to freeze to death. At one point, I espied a man sitting on a bench outside a shop, chin dropped to chest, sound asleep. Later, the same man could be found fully reposed on the bench, unmoving. Eventually, a security guard came by to check in on The Sleeper. Trouble was, he couldn't roust the guy. Two women walked by, one observing that the man appeared dead, the other -- who I'd learn was a nurse -- rushing over to check for a pulse. Well, her cold hands on his skin sure got him up in a hurry. Turns out he wasn't dead. Just suffering from the male syndrome that is so prevalent at this time of year: The Shopping Coma. A few minutes later The Sleeper's wife sauntered by and said: "Only a few more stores, honey, and then we can go home." Yeah, I've heard that one before.
