O n Tuesday, the federal government rolled out its refugee resettlement plan, which includes welcoming 10,000 refugees by the end of December and the other 15,000 refugees in January and February 2016. I have been in touch with the Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and been invited to provide feedback on this federal refugee resettlement plan. Over the past few months, members of Town council have heard from many residents voicing their support for Oakville to get involved helping refugees. Though the legacy Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) site will not be decommissioned in time to be a suit- Oakville supports Syrian refugee resettlement plan: Mayor Mayor Rob Burton Town of Oakville 5 | Thursday, November 26, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com able facility to house refugees, there are other ways we will be helping. Visit oakville.ca and search `refugees' for a list of how you can help. You are encouraged to get involved in one of the many local initiatives supporting refugees. It is wonderful to see this community come together time after time to help those who are struggling with hardships. It feels good to do good. As such, our town will support the federal government's refugee plan in any way we can. I think former Oakville Mayor William Anderson said it best -- Oakville is an example of a town where people, irrespective of race or religious persuasion are living in harmony and are dedicated to developing their town for the good of all and for the grandeur of the nation. Let us continue to be an example for Canada by working together and helping those Syrian refugees who need our help.
