continued from p.1 how mild we are, headed into the holidays." December's average temperatures will hover around 5 C or 6 C, sometimes warmer, when daytime highs in Oakville and the Greater Toronto Area are typically around 1 C or 2 C, said Vettese. "If you have Christmas shopping to do, or you still have to decorate outside, hang some lights, whatever the case may be, I think the weather is going to be in your favour for that," said Vettese. Heading into January and February, the weather will transition into more of a "classic winter" pattern that is typical for the GTA. El Nino's influence expected to be strongest in December "We expect to be a little bit colder, from what we experience in December, and we will get some snow and some colder temperatures, but we don't anticipate those long-lived, Arctic cold outbreaks that we saw over the last two winters," she explained, adding meteorologists are also not expecting to see prolonged periods of cold that occurred during the last two winter seasons. When asked how it will affect ski hills in the area, Vettese said it will be tough for ski hills in southern Ontario to get going in December. "We did have some snow in November, but it's been mild and it might just be a little too mild to create snow," she said. "It's going to be a bit of a struggle in December, but they should be able to get a better handle on making snow or even just natural snow coming to the end of December into January and February. "Unfortunately, we may have to wait a little bit longer before we can do winter sports," Vettese added. El Nino, the warm ocean current that is strengthening in the North Pacific, continues to impact local weather patterns. "It has a large impact on our patterns across North America, but I think we'll feel those impacts more in December with this mild month. Then headed into January and February, we'll start to see El Nino weaken in the Pacific." Daytime highs in January and February will likely reach -1 C and -2 C. 15 | Friday, December 4, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Happy Holidays El Spero Family Restaurant! Breakfast · Lunch · Dinner from all of us at SAVIS hosts candlelight vigil Dec. 6 A candlelight vigil in memory of the 14 women gunned down 26 years ago in the Montreal Massacre will be held Sunday (Dec. 6). The women were murdered and another 14 people were injured by an armed man who entered the École Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989. Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) of Halton will host the ceremony to be held this year at St. Paul's United Church, 123 Main St. E., in Milton at 7 p.m. in honour of the women who were killed because of their gender. Although 26 years have passed, SAVIS of Halton states the issue of gender violence remains a significant concern. About 51 per cent of Canadian women will experience at least one incident of sexual or physical violence in their lifetime and one out of three Canadian women will experience sexual assault in their adult lifetime, according to a SAVIS of Halton statement. "Violence against women is still a reality in 2015. We are here to support all survivors and we continue to work hard to end violence against women," said Sondos Parker, SAVIS acting-executive director.
