www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, December 31, 2015 | 12 Fiery crash claims two lives days before Christmas by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff Two people were killed and another was sent to hospital with minor injuries following a fiery four-vehicle crash on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in Oakville the evening of Dec. 22. The eastbound lanes of the QEW between Trafalgar Road and Ford Drive in Oakville remained closed until the evening of Dec. 23 for repaving, OPP reported. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt advised drivers to find an alternative route around the QEW in Oakville -- in what created traffic chaos around town. Schmidt said a combination of fire and diesel compromised the road, which had to be sanded and swept before a grinding machine could grind the asphalt and repave it. The traffic chaos was nothing compared to the tragedy that resulted from the crash. Around 9 p.m., Dec. 22, a transport truck and a car collided just east of Trafalgar Road, according to Schmidt. "A very short time later there was another SUV and flatbed transport truck that approached the scene and the SUV was then jammed between the two transport trucks, causing the two people in the SUV to lose their lives," he said. Investigators remained on the scene throughout the night trying to piece together what caused the crash. Two people were killed and a third sent to hospital in a fiery, four-vehicle crash that took place on the eastbound QEW, east of Trafalgar Road, Dec. 22 and closed the highway for most of Dec. 23 as police investigated and the roadway was re-paved. | photo by Justin Greaves Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog) Two men were believed to be in the SUV and while they were not immediately identified, Schmidt said investigators believed they knew their identities. Police waited for the coroner's report to positively identify the crash victims. As of the Oakville Beaver's press deadline, the identities of the deceased had not been released. The driver of the transport truck was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. Schmidt spent Dec. 23 asking motorists to be patient and understanding of the delays they were experiencing in the area. "We're working as hard as we can to get the highway reopened, but we're limited to the circumstances that we're involved with right now," he said. "Here we are just two days before Christmas and people are dealing with grief here." The strip of highway affected was reopened in time for the afternoon commute. The collision was investigated by members of Burlington OPP Detachment. Investigators appealed for witnesses to come forward with information, by calling Const.
