Ontario L6J 5E4 catapults down San Francisco's steeply-embanked streets, careens through carcongested intersections and bobs and weaves around oncoming traffic in pursuit (McQueen plays a do-it-hisown way police officer) of the bad guys in their black (naturally) '68 Dodge Charger left most moviegoers completely breathless. In the 33 years since the movie was released, that brief clip still remains the most goose bump-inducing chase scene ever staged. Someone, it seems, at Ford finally woke up to the fact that the everlasting popu larity of McQueen (who died of cancer in 1980), the movie and the Mustang was a pow erful mix that offered consid erable marketing potential. The Mustang Bullitt GT made its initial debut in January of 2000 at the Los Angeles International Auto Show as a concept vehicle. Although parked far away from the glitzy and glam orous Ford show vehicles that took centre stage, the car attracted hundreds of journal ists and spectators who crowded around as if trying to score some big-time movie star autograph. No doubt about it, nostalgia is still alive and well in the car business, and the reincarnated Mustang Bullitt proved the point. A year later, the final pro duction version of the Bullitt made its debut at the same venue. The car comes with a host of changes compared to the base Mustang GT that fortu nately are more than just movie-style cosmetic add ons and touch-ups. At the heart of the matter is Ford's 4.6-litre SOHC V8 that is the workhorse of all regular-strength GTs. However, the Bullitt variant produces 265 horsepower, 2001 D od g e C a r a v a n , Grand five more than the base V8, C a r a v a n and Town & C o u n t r y F IN /E S T A R thanks to a larger throttle `C aravan. * 1 S e llin g Vehicle in Canada. i Cf o ^ Oakville's 2000 ·2001 body, new cast aluminum Five Star Certified Dealership intake manifold and twin 175 Wyecroft Road, high-flow mufflers. » Peace of Mind with DaimlerChrysler Oakville 905.845.6653 The engine's torque curve Canada Inc. backed warranty (between Kerr & Dorval) * Roadside Assistance has. also been revised for * Quality Reconditioning k . www.lockwoodchrysler.com R Y S L E R more available power in the * Nationwide Service E LOCKWOOD lower rpm range. A fivespeed manual transmission (did you think McQueen would be caught driving an automatic?) completes the Bullitt powertrain. To keep the car's handling sharp and precise, the Bullitt has had its suspension low ered by three-quarters of an inch. There are also stiffer front and rear sway bars and specially-tuned shocks added to the handling package. For greater stopping power, the front disc brakes have been upgraded to 13inch Brembo units, with their telltale red calipers visible through the 17-inch magstyle wheels that closely match the ones equipped on the original Mustang movie car. Outwardly, Ford has tried to give the Bullitt a retro fastback appearance by squaring off the side of the rear roof pillar. Special side scoops have also been added, as well as brushed-aluminum fuelfiller door, unique exhaust tips and rocker-panel mold ings that accentuate the car's lowered stance. Interior details on the Bullitt include special leather-covered bucket seats, aluminum shifter ball and floor-pedal covers along with a speedometer design intend ed to evoke memories of past Mustangs. If the particular shade of Dark Highland Green used on the movie car is not to your liking, the Bullitt GT can be ordered in True Blue as well as black. Ford plans to produce a limited run of about 6,500 Bullitt GTs (500 are destined for Canada) this year with a sticker price that's $5,700 higher than a Mustang GT. That should be enough to give fans seriously addicted to McQueen and his movie a shot at picking up one of these cars without forming a lengthy queue outside the nearest dealership. Who knows, if this whole movie car concept catches on, we might soon be able to purchase a Pontiac Firebird `Rockford', Peugeot `Columbo' or maybe even a pickup truck with a Clampett Hillbilly option package. In the movies, as in the automobile business, fantasy is foremost and nothing is impossible. The new Mustang Bullitt GT is living proof.
