Yoga is a Hindu philosophy that teaches the suppression of all activity of body, mind and will so that the self may realize its distinction, and attain libera tion, from them. Simply put, it's a system of exercises for attaining bodily or mental control and well-being. Worsfold, who worked in manage ment consulting and corporate training discovered yoga when her husband Michael took her on a yoga holiday in the Bahamas five years ago. "I wasn't convinced so I said, I'll go on the condition that there's be a beach," said Worsfold. Worsfold continues to be a student of various types of yoga, as well as a teacher, and recently ventured to India to study with yoga expert Deepak Chopra. Over the summer, Worsfold, who has · also trained with Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Full Catastrophe Living, a book about living with pain, has taught yoga and meditation at Wellspring. "I'm a student as well as being a teacher. I think it makes me a more inter esting teacher and a practitioner of what I preach," said Worsfold. Yoga is for "absolutely all ages" and people facing all manner of health condi tions, said Worsfold, noting its benefits are plentiful. It can help release stress; promote relaxation; and increase flexibility of the spine, hips, knees, ankles and sciatic nerves, she said. Yoga, which can be as strenuous as one makes it, can firm tnuscles like the thighs, calves, hips, abdomen and upper arms, said Worsfold. Besides helping develop concentra tion and patience, yoga can also help cir culation to internal organs and glands. And, there's more, said Worsfold, who claims yoga can also help condi tions from carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, and headaches, to back pain, even depression. Yoga opens the door to relaxation and getting in touch with your body. You may discover which part of your body you're bottling up stress or tension and find out how to release the tension that causes headaches, said Worsfold. "My motto really is no gain with pain," said Worsfold, who said each yoga position can be adjusted to a student's ability. "I tell students to go right to the edge so that the body feels like it's working, but you're not experiencing pain," said Worsfold, noting, ability grows from there. Yoga is non-competitive and students work at their individual level. "Every time you do yoga you feel dif ferent, depending on the weather or your mood. Every time, you feel different, every time, even me," said Worsfold. The fee for Le Yoga sessions are $ 112 pre-paid for eight weeks; $5 to bring a guest to a session, and $15 per class to pay-as-you-go. Worsfold will also hold a free intro ductory session on Sept. 6. A change this time around with Le Yoga's fall lineup is the absence of a Saturday morning program, however Worsfold hopes a special emphasis workshop on October 13 will make up for it. Children across Canada will be flipping pancakes and scrambling eggs during Breakfast for Learning Month, Sept. 10 to Oct. 8. This year, the non-profit organization is setting aside a full month to raise aware ness of the fact that many of Canada's chil dren are not getting the nourishment they need to concentrate and learn at school. The campaign will shine the spotlight on kids in the kitchen. "Many Canadian kids will graduate school having no idea of how to put a meal on the table," says Martha O'Connor, the executive director of , Canadian Living Foundation. "Some schools don't have the facilities for cook ing classes. In some school boards, food preparation is not part of the curriculum." While some children learn how to cook at home, in other families cooking is not a priority. Through its funding of breakfast, lunch and snack programs, Breakfast for Learning, Canadian Living Foundation helps provide children with the nourish ment they need to leam.
