Wednesday, October 3, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C5 Take notes each year, and add (Continued from page C4) too far apart. About 4" will give a bang up show the first year and many after if they are planted deep - 10" to 12" - in sandy soil or 8" in clay. This will discourage them from multi plying, so they will flower each year in the garden for at least 20 years. There w ere a few hundred Canadian Centennial tulips planted in 1966 in our gar den and they have bloomed annually ever since. The bed is a little thicker, but they are still flowering each year. Every year, take notes and add some annual plants in the spring to fill in any colour gaps. Then plant more tulips, if necessary, in the fall; thus, keeping the garden flowering from early spring to fall. There are many summer blooming bulbs like lilies, dahlias, iris, gladiolus, begonias and canna lilies that can keep the colour inten sity high during the hot summer. This spring, some boxes o f yellow glads and yellow dahlias were given to the hospital roof garden. A few were planted in the extreme heat and the rest put in a locker on the roof. About a month ago, the locker was opened for a tool and the bulbs were discov ered and planted. They flowered last week. It's a wonder what bulbs will suffer and still fulfill their destiny. The stiff stems o f the gladiolus and for mality of the dahlias made a great foil for the wild-eyed cosmos and gentle turtle heads. The number o f pots of mums for sale is amazing. They are nearly as numerous as the spring annuals and are in several pot sizes and many colours. This season, a new hardy perennial - 'My Favorite Mum' - has been introduced. This seems to be bucking the trend which is to treat mums like annuals and discard them when they finish flowering. On Morrison Road, you can see several large pots o f yellow mums in full bloom. These bright flowers emphasize the large rocks featured in this interesting front garden.
