Demons defend SRSL league cup championship The Oakville Demons U -ll AA girls rep soccer team successfully defended their South Region Soccer League (SRSL) Cup Championship by defeating a game North Mississauga Mustang squad 2-1 in overtime in a thrilling match that show cased the Demons skilled passing and ball control game. The Demons controlled most of the game and for a while it looked like their goal midway through the first half -- one of their prettiest they have scored all season long -- would hold up. Meghan Sowsun capped off the fabu lous foray with a left foot rocket into the lower right hand comer, after some deft touches and passes from several team mates, including Andrea Robillard, Lindsey Brown and Victoria Millucci. But to the credit o f North Mississauga they would not allow a knock out blow and were able to pick themselves up off the matt for a furious end-game rally, which paid off with the equalizer three minutes from time. Clearly deflated the Demons played out regulation time at 1-1. The words of encouragement prior to overtime from coaches Tom Ryan and Simon Pendlebury had the desired effect as the Demons stormed out and immediately took control of the play in the first overtime period. North Mississauga was incapable of getting the ball past half as the Demons totally overwhelmed the Mustangs. With time winding down in the first OT midfielder Lisa Ryan gathered up a loose ball at the top right hand comer of the box, teed it up and ripped a shot that soared over the North Mississauga keeper's head. catching the top left hand comer for the Golden Goal that gave Oakville the repeat. This Premier Division championship team consists o f a defensive core that stacks up against any with co-captains Sloane George and Carrie Kalata, Jaime Neefs and Daniela Gysler. In net, Monica Maher sported a SRSL league-leading 0.57 G. A. A with 7 shutouts. The midfield of Victoria Millucci, Lindsey Brown, Dani Ganassini, Laura Pendlebury, Amanda Pope and Lisa Ryan is second to none. Up front Sarah Dulmage, Christine Meissner, Andrea Robillard and Meghan Sowsun applied their offensive skills that resulted in the Demons outscoring their opposition 17-4 in year-long Cup playdowns. The Oakville Demons would like to thank their sponsors: Wrigley's Extra; Dr. Chris Lang and the Glen Abbey Dental Office; Wire4Sale; Halton General Contracting; Absolute Solutions; Quadratone; GE Capital and Consultrans Logistics. Despite much exciting pressure from both squads, the tie could not be broken through regulation, and in fact through most o f the two 10-minute O.T. periods. But with time winding down, a well set up Andrea Robillard deposited the Golden Goal just inside the right post. The Demons tournament victory was a total team effort as they outscored their opponents 16-2 over the weekend. Oakville won their semifinal match 4-0 over division winner Vaughan Azzurri. You know, I asked Andrea, one day, like with our daughter, to work out, like, a split leap, and just little tips like that, because I don't have the background myself, and I'm totally just doing it from looking at the tapes."
