Hey, no one enjoys a good nap more than me -- truth be told, there are days when I think my life may well have peaked during kindergarten naptime. Further, I revel in relaxation, at least when the stars and life align and I can steal time away from the daily grind to put my barking dogs up and unwind. Finally, I've been doing yoga -- and loving its countless bene ts -- for nearly nine years. Alas, the thought of combining these relaxing, pleasurable pursuits, gave me a big case of the warm and fuzzies. But what exactly is restorative yoga? According to the story, restorative yoga is "about the art of active rest" with the goal of "total relaxation." How does one reach total relaxation? Lay in a dimly lit room. Listen to either silence or calming music (no Motorhead). Place a blanket over you and use rm pillows to support your body. Be warm, comfortable. Engage in mind-cleansing meditative breathing. Then, "the restoration comes in the state of being just before falling asleep...." Well, this concept took me back. Years ago, I was (to understate) having anxiety issues. A wise specialist recommended I read Dr. Joan Borysenko's ground-breaking book, Minding The Body, Mending The Mind, in which the good doctor introduced readers to the wonder and science behind The Relaxation Response. You know how when humans face danger (real or perceived) they go into a ght-oright survival state of physiological hyperarousal?
