Spenser Chapple's book One Red Lipstick, set to officially launch on International Women's Day (March 8), is part of a larger project to highlight "female entrepreneurs who used strength and tenacity to build a business," stated a media release. A documentary with the same title is set to be released in May. At age 17, Chapple's father suffered a brain stem stroke and came close to death, which meant her mother, Fay, had to become a caregiver to her disabled husband while continuing to raise her three children, according to the release. Chapple said she began the One Red Lipstick project because she witnessed how her mother and her mom's friends were able to go on with their lives even after facing adversity. "My mom would say to me, `You get up, put on your red lipstick, and get on with it, no matter what,'" Chapple said in the release. "We all need role models, and I found them. The women are real and honest, not sugar coating what happened to them, yet they go on to find success." The book features the real-life stories of 24 women, several of whom live in Halton. "The stories show us that while you can't control everything in your life, you can control how you show up," Anne Day, editor of One Red Lipstick and one of the women who tells her story in the book, said in the release. The theme to this year's International Women's Day is "Women's Empowerment Leads to Equality," defining empowerment as "having the tools to make better choices." Chapple said she hopes One Red Lipstick will become one of those tools for women. "Women don't have to feel alone, stuck, or defeated," Chapple said in the release. "We all have options. If we get help and give help, we can get there together." Briar Nolet stars in her third season with popular tween show The Next Step For Briar Nolet, dance is a necessity of life. "I've always lived with it and I always plan to," said the 17-year-old Burlington native, who was raised in Oakville. Briar is in her third season as a cast member of Family Channel's popular tween show, The Next Step. "When I hear music, I start to dance. When something really good happens, I dance. When I'm angry, I dance. When I'm sad, I dance," she said. "Dancing is my way of expressing myself." Briar began dancing at the age of seven at the Oakville-based Canadian Dance Company and never stopped. She has earned several national and international dance titles, recently receiving the 1st runner-up soloist award at the prestigious American Dance Awards in New York City. This past summer, she was one of six Next Step dancers who travelled across Canada on the Big Ticket Summer Concert tour, and she is currently part of the show's European Wild Rhythm tour. Briar plays Richelle, one of the elite dancers at The Next Step dance studio, who is determined to become a member of the ATroupe and help the team defend its title at the regional competition. "I feel like I have a few things in common with Richelle. She is very feisty and determined with dancing and I can definitely say I can relate to that. Although she does have a little more attitude and sass than I do." Briar's first season of filming was "a bit intimidating" but she has now found her comfort zone. "The show has changed my life in the best way possible. Having amazing fans everywhere I go and getting to do what I love on TV ... is such an amazing feeling. As well, getting to work with inspiring dancers and actors every day is incredible. I am so grateful and honoured to be a part of such an unbelievably amazing and life changing experience."
