Hill's first novel, Any Known Blood, a multigenerational story about a Canadian man of mixed race, was met with critical acclaim, and it marked the emergence of a powerful new voice in Canadian writing. Photo by Barrie Erskine Lawrence Hill will discuss his new book at Bookers Books and Brunch on Sunday in The Oakville Club, beginning at 10:30 a.m. In his new book, Hill, him self a child o f a black father and a white mother, reveals his struggle to understand his own personal and racial identity. Raised by human rights activist parents in a predominantly white Ontario suburb, Hill is imbued with lingering memories and offers a unique perspective. In a satirical, yet serious tone, Hill describes the ambiguity involved in searching for his iden tity - an especially complex and difficult journey in a country that prefers to see him as neither black nor white. Interspersed with slices o f his personal experi ences, fascinating family history, and the experi ences o f 36 other Canadians o f mixed race interviewed for this book, Black Berry, Sweet Juice also examines contemporary racial issues in Canadian society. Hill explores the terms used to describe chil dren o f mixed race, the unrelenting hostility towards mixed-race couples, and the real mean ing of the black Canadian experience. Along with Hill, authors Amanda Hale and Richard Wright will talk about their newest pub lications - Sounding the Blood and Clara Callan, respectively. Books and Brunch will begin at 10:30 a.m. in The Oakville Club at 56 Water St. For more information or tickets, which are $30 each, call Bookers at 905-844-5501. Artist releases reproductions: one of each Oakville harbour Oakville artist Joe Smith has just released two limited edition repro ductions featuring the tow n's two harbours. The print runs were limited to 450 hand-signed, numbered repro ductions plus 65 artist's proofs. Smith, who works primarily in w atercolours, has been painting O akville scenes for a num ber of years. Each year he has taken one o f his original paintings and had it repro duced as a limited edition print. How ever, this year he released two because, he says, he couldn't choose between the two local harbours. "Both are very beautiful and both capture the essence of our lakeside community. I could not choose one over the other, so I had both of my paintings reproduced," he said. W hile selling original works is Sm ith's primary objective, he says he got into the reproduction business because he had so many requests for Oakville scenes, and could not keep painting the same thing over and over. Since many o f his prints are pur chased as gifts for people moving or retiring or for business gifts or simply m em entos o f O akville, he says, reproductions allow him to keep the price within most people's budgets $99.95 matted and framed. Smith works from his home studio and can be reached by calling 905827-6634.
